apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#18: Erin's Color-Splashed Modern

Name: Erin
Location: Sacramento, CA
Size & Type: 613 sq. ft. 1-Bedroom

Favorite resource: Dwell magazine -- a major source of inspiration.

Pitch: I recently read an article that stated that it's the quality of space not the quantity of space that matters -- I couldn't agree more. As a renter with artistically timid landlords, my apartment improvements have been limited to design choices that don't alter the structure. Heck, even painting the walls has been vetoed by said landlords. Still, incorporating timeless pieces with affordable items has allowed me to create a stylish home that doesn't break the bank.

Pitch Cont'd: Modern furniture, minimal clutter and splashes of vibrant color make my home comfortable and airy. Oh, and natural light helps keep the place bright.

Your favorite element: Despite the fact that I'm not much of a cook, the kitchen is the highlight of my place. The windows face west and as the sun sets, the room is bathed in a warm glow -- it's perfection.

I am loving the colours... and I couldn't agree with you more that quality takes precedence over quantity of space. Your home is lovely and I adore your charming bedroom and lively kitchen!

The first photo of your bedroom was great... a welcome splash of spring color. it made me expect more from the photos that followed. The rest of your space seems a bit sparse and unconnected.

What is the deal with these paint-fearin' landlords??? They should be dealt with Clockwork Orange style, only using a color wheel instead of slides/video.

i'm curious as to why your fantastic chairs are in the corners rather than grouped by the couch or something? I love your mix of stuff and how you have handled being a renter with picky landlords. very cool.

Very sweet place, but I'd bet you can get some more color in there. White walls always feel sterile to me. Even a nice taupe or a dove grey would make the room feel a little warmer while keeping the same refreshing lightness.

This is really excellent----making the most of what's available to you. I too like the roll shade on the bottom of the bookshelf.

The green bedroom is totally awesome. If the living room had more red, that would only add to the awesomeness.
