apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#19: Manuela's Clean Romantic

Name: Manuela
Location: Seattle, WA
Size & Type: 425 sq. ft. studio rental

Favorite resource: Apart from Apartment Therapy... traveling!

Pitch: My small is cool because there are interesting architectural details in my home that make solutions more challenging and rewarding. The large closet in my studio has become my bedroom, with the shelf above my bed becoming a gallery for my black and white photographs. Small discourages thoughtless consumption.

Pitch Cont'd: My small shows much restraint and editing; I ask myself, "Are these the things that make me happy? Do my surroundings allow and encourage me to reach my goals?" Thus, an easel takes up important real estate. My small is clean, soft, romantic, and of course: cool.

Your favorite element: It's a tie between the two doors to my bedroom, and the random hidden niche in my kitchen where I keep sentimental tchotchkes.

The closet/bedroom looks good, especially the photo rail. Your submitted photos really aren't doing your space justice, especially the open toilet in the bathroom (always looks SO MUCH BETTER closed!).

Kind of cool, has potential.

Get rid of those Christmas lights. Otherwise it looks like a nice clean and calm palate to live/work in.

I disagree. I think the lights are cute and probably look very romantic at night, they also go with your unconventional sense of non-conforming simplicity. Your place is adorable, although I didn't really need to see your bathroom. I would have rather seen your kitchen. I like your artist sensibility. I almost made my closet into a bedroom, but I need a window to sleep by and mine abuts the bathroom, is there a window in your closet?

Good work. Thanks for sharing. P.S. Love your photos.

This is the second apartment I've seen with the toilet lid up. I don't get it, but then again I have cats.

Christmas lights are indeed romantic but might be better to have a set with white wire instead of green.

Has potential, but the bathroom pic (adds nothing) and the green x-mas light string take away from the overall look. (Either get a white string or hide the current on behind the curtains, softenening the lights and increasing the romanticism.

On the positive -- good use of the closet as a sleeping nook and minimal consumption

The first photo made me perk up, but then... toilet seat down (if you really must show the bathroom) and flash OFF people.

Is that sweet little desk painted to match the walls, or were they painted to match it? Or do they not actually match. Anyway, it looks like they do and I am liking the result very much--it brings the desk to a place somewhere between an independent piece of furniture and a built-in.

I notice that the picture rail was your closet rod/shelf like I have in my closet. That's a smart use of a pre-existing feature. Good job. It's odd to me that the closet would be so huge when no actual sleeping area was designed here. Strange place you have there. All the more reason why it's impressive how you've made it yours.

This is not the Malloy in the U-District by any chance, is it? If not, the layout is remarkably similar. My husband and I lived in a studio there that looked exactly like yours, from what I see pictured, with approximately the same square footage, for four years. We also made the walk-in closet into a bedroom for a while, then decided to move the bed into the main room with shelves as a room divider, turning the closet back into a closet/office.

Caitlin in Seattle,

Flash off? What if there is no natural light in your bathroom? Do you just use the electric light? And are you talking just the bathroom or everytime/everywhere in your home? I really have no idea.

Hi, I had to take a second look at your place and I really love it (sans the bathroom pic). The purity of your place is so refreshing. I would love to sit there, sip herb tea and discuss art with you. I love the prominence of the easel and how it is positioned by your bed. Do you dream of paintings? I do.

I want to put an easel promimently in my place. I'd love to see your place after a few years. I hope you keep your purity and own no knick-knacks, only paintings. I could see you living in a very minimalist place with paintings piled and propped.

Good work. I hope you win a prize, although anything from DWR would ruin the purity here.

I do like it, love the minimalism of the colours, but the photos don't do it justice.

I love your apt, but I want your art. I love the piece on the easel and the one over the couch. Wonderful. You use a lot of black and white, but it looks very warm. It's inspiring to me because that's where I'm heading, and I want to keep away from stark and cold.

mgb, I agree with your comment. It must be the shad of white that "warms" the combo? I, too, am looking for an easel to display art.
