apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#2: Suzanne's Studio of Salvage

Name: Suzanne
Location: The Biggest Little City: Reno, Nevada
Size & Type: 156 square feet [155.25 to be exact] studio

Favorite resource: Architectural salvage yards (specifically, Berkeleys Omega) and various textile prints: Endless inspiration and unique materials come from the treasures one finds in salvage yards, much like in vintage clothing or record stores. The bathroom print is a hand-painted and personalized version of a favorite textile pattern.

Pitch:

This place went from profound disaster to petite delight with some ardent persuasion, personal labor, invaluable lessons, and six hundred dollars.

2007_04_10_SC2-Bathroom.jpg

Pitch Cont'd:

Renovating the previously unlivable, free-standing structure included wood flooring, a salvaged tile backsplash, a new countertop and cabinet hardware in the kitchen, salvaged tile flooring in the bathroom, paint everywhere, and the shower (literally, a metal box) was refinished inside with marine boat paint! By day, a simple duvet is rolled camp-style and the ends of the single-width bed fold to create a couch, allowing the (only) main space to function as both living and bed room.

Your favorite element:

The Kitchen and the Light: As one who loves to cook, with its vintage chocolate tiles lit by saturating morning sun or the delicate overhead lights by night, this kitchenette is a pleasure to use. Regardless of its modest size, the three windows receive sun all day and flood the space with light, bringing a sense of life and openness into the space.

This first picture had me very confused, until I realized that the pictures were pasted together. I, too, would love to see more of the bathroom wall painting. Cute kitty. :)

So white! I know someone is gonna come on here and say "clutter" but it's not clutter to me - your books and knick knacks look neat and happy. But for me, the one red pillow and the one blue wall are not cuttin it. Color color color!

Those chocalate tiles in the kitchen are awesome! I love your sofa the white walls and that blue-green wall in the bathroom. Nice use of color in this well put together small space!

I love your mural (or whatever it is) in the bathroom! You've packed a lot into a tiny space.

C-c-c-c-cluttter -- need more closed storage.

I do share in the love of the bathroom wall painting however.

Loving the tininess. Is the couch/daybed where you sleep? That's a very cool idea. And I don't agree about the colour. Your gray is very pretty and of the moment.

155.25 Sq feet. Impressive. That's the size of some closets I've seen.

I like your color palette to try and keep the place light and open. I disagree about the need for more color, as I think that with spaces this small either you need to go over the top with color and feel cocooned or go with a whispy spare color pallette to feel more open.

Not that I live what I'm about to say...but I think enlosed storage might help a bit with the feel of clutter.

OMG another Reno-ite! What neighborhood are you in? I love the relaxing colors and the bathroom tile, have you got any good local resources to share? Pretty please? Looks clean and cozy to me, not cluttered!

I like your place but LOVE how you maximized the use of the modest 3-photo rule. What a great idea and I feel like I got to see so much more of your place than any of the others so far.

Totally disagree that this place looks cluttered. She has packed a whole life's worth of living in basically one SMALL room.

I couldn't do it, and she did it with easy-breezy style.

And a rare case where white looks intentional, versus the lack of a color decision.

It seems cluttered, but it might also be the way the photos were assembled. Hard to tell.

Love that the colour scheme is mostly kept neutral. I think it needs more texture rather than more colour - everything seems flat and smooth, and some natural textures to go with the twiggy decorations in vases would be lovely. A small enclosed cupboard, or maybe a trunk (so it can double as seating) to tuck away a few of the smaller bits and pieces would help it feel more serene, which I think is the effect you're going for.

Cluttered?? Where… it's called living - the place has character, not everyone likes the cold, no personality, minimalist look. Well done on 156 square feet!! Looks 'cool'!

This WHOLE PLACE is SMALLER than my living room (172 sf or 16 sm). Well done!!

MICRO. Sure it looks a little cluttered, but for an apartment that is sub-200sf she's done an excellent job with it. Apartments this small are really a whole level of challenging above an beyond places that are 300sf .

AND she shares the space with a cat!

Maybe if you win you can get something to store your books and papers! I think it looks pretty good for such a tiny space. I'm a white fan.

stunning...and only 160sf!! how do you ever have enough space for guests?? i like the use of the square metal planter boxes in front of your daybed, serving as storage & functional moveable furniture. good job including your orange cat in the picture (all the color you need)!

PS:

The colors are fantastic; the furniture plan terrific; plus you did so much with so little. I am so, so impressed.

Every little thing is thought out and so beautiful!

Where did you get your window shades? How did you choose the paint colors?

I wish I could see the shower.

The only thing I'd change is hanging the window shades next to the ceiling.

"Breezy" is a very good word for this place. I'm a fan of white and think it's doing a killer job making this place look bigger than it is (I did one of those Looney Tunes double-takes when I saw the square footage), but I personally would love it if there were just one more pop of color somewhere, maybe in a piece of art above the sofa/bed, the window treatment, or on the shower curtain. And maybe reading this site is getting to me but I did think that clutter-wise it would be nice to take the books off the tops of the ottomen/coffee table: maybe switch out what you have for storage cubes? But regardless, I am in awe of what you've done with so little space.

I am starting to really love white.

I don't know how you did such a wonderful job in this little space but I commend you.

It's wonderful.

Ok, so now please, please tell me whether the sofa is comfy because I have considered buying the exact one so I can ditch my current one and therefore provide a sleeping place for one guest in my teeny place. Seriously, please let me know.

I don't see any clutter at all.

Cool little place - love the bathroom print, but the extra towel hanging on the bathroom door should go if the door is generally open that wide. (Might just be that it's in the middle of the pic, but my first thought was 'drapey')

Great sofa, and I love the white-on-white artwork in that room. The neutrals really work here, but I agree about the need for more closed storage.

Not cluttered! Any more enclosed storage would create clutter! Even the afore -mentioned trunk would take up any "extra" space and prevent movement in 155.25 sf. The chair at the counter, along with the duvet, would suffice for guests as you couldn't possibly have more than 2!!! Great job.

Incredible! Amazing, what you did with such a micro space. I really love the mural in your bath and the dark wood accents for contrast amidst the white.

For a person that likes to cook, what do you cook on? Is there a stove? Oh well... you still get a stellar vote in my book. Heck, anyone that can make a 160 sqft place as liveable and beautiful as you have deserves to win this contest. You get my vote!
