Name: Billy
Location: Oakland, CA
Size & Type: 448.5 sq. ft. 1-bedroom apartment
Favorite resource: Dwell, Surface, Room & Board, Tail of the Yak, Maison De Etre, Friend SF, CB2, 2Modern
Pitch: My apartment is quite cool because the mid century dcor compliments the boxy, 50's architecture. As I'm a renter, I could not score permission to custom paint, so I had to work with the white walls. Luckily, they have a very nice plastering texture, so I played off that with creative uses of lighting.
Pitch Cont'd: The focal point of the living area is a cowhide upholstered Le Corbusier Pierre chair. A Nelson bench creates a very versatile coffee table/ottoman. I chose furnishings that were low to the ground to add a sense of height to the ceilings, and contrasted them with high vertical shelves and storage cubes that compose the home office area.
Your favorite element: I love Cubos storage cubes, they are amazingly space-efficient, as well as the Gallery shelves/desk. I also love the Pierre chair, it's the most comfortable and iconic piece in my place.
It would have been nice to see more than just the living room from 3 different angles. Without seeing a complete small space and how cool it "all" is, I can't justify voting it the 'coolest'.

Has potential. While there are some great mid-century pieces here, they are lost in business of the place. To me, mid-century decor is all about a feeling of simplicity and sleekness. it could be the photos, but I don't get that here.
Kudos for the integration of 'high' end (nelson bench and Pierre chair) and 'low' end (Ikea window coverings).

I think it's nicely done for being a "white box" rental. I'd also like to see pix of the other 224.25 sq.ft.

I agree with above. I would love to have seen your bedroom, or kitchen, even bathroom. Also, this is the first time I do this but...you have so many beautiful things but my eye is going everywhere in this picture. For instance, I notice you need your workspace the shelves with books (by the way it's very neat and organized) but perhaps removing the art above the fireplace and whats on the mantle.

OPPS! Forgive me I'm literally going blind, seriously! I didn't realize that was your television! So, edit what's above the t.v. as well as what's on the shelf! Gosh, I'm totally losin it!

Great furniture and potential, but too much eye clutter for me.

Jeez, people are so negative on this site! I love your place; I think its unique and beautiful. Great work!

I second the love for the pillows on the sofa!
Where are they from?

There's a lot going on here, I missed your focal point chair in the first picture and had to go back and look for it. I like a lot of things you've done but there is so much going on that I feel like it all gets lost.

There are a lot of nice pieces of furniture, but far too much clutter that distracts from them.

What are the screens on your windows? They look great.

Way too much going on in that room. Visual overload. I'm currently deciding on where to place my desk in my open loft space of 600sq.ft. and it definitely is NOT going to be 2 feet away from my living room as in this place.
I don't feel bad giving constructive criticism to people who post their homes up. They're stepping up and saying "look at my place" and they have to expect criticism.

Too many different shelves. Try to unify them

Cluttered (just my opinion) and we only get to see 3 different photos of the same room... would have liked to see more of the apt. But I love your cowhide chair and the pillows on the couch. I think your room is nice, it could be in a magazine or something, just not my taste.

eeep too much stuff! hide some of those cd cases at least!
i love the second picture though, whatever your using to cover your windows is gorgeous

Too much stuff. Does injustice to your nice pieces. Love the lamps and the window treatment, pillows, vases. You have a great eye so please edit, edit, edit.

The sofa area is lovely. I don't care for the mishmash of storage in the living room though. I'd rather see uniform storage units.

wow, i can't believe so many people dislike this enough to vote "not my thang"! there is a lot of stuff, but at least it's well-organized stuff. i'm guessing people might feel differently if the cds and dvds at least were hidden from view? some of the pieces (the pillows, esp) are lovely. i would love to see pictures of the rest of the place, but this place definitely earns a cool with potential from me.

While the sofa area (and above it) look great, the livingroom unfortunately looks WAY too cluttered. It's neat yet, but too much stuff. I do love the green on the window over the sofa and the lighting.

Voting in the middle because I could see this place being a winner without so much stuff in it.

Very, very nice. A note: you use compliment in your pitch copy when I believe you mean complement.

I voted insta-finalist because I think this is the kind of place that could really use the DWR boost. Some nice unified shelving, a nice LC couch to go with that chair ;-)

You have some really nice pieces that I am drooling over. You've done a nice job arranging these pieces in a rental, which is usually a pretty difficult task.
A couple comments - not to slam your place but as thoughts ...
For me, there is a lot of visual clutter in using different storage solutions in the same room - specifically the shelving, cubes, the media cart (and is that a lack shelf above the TV?). They are all good solutions individually but they don't work, for me, in one space. I think that an approach that used the same type of storage throughout the room would reduce the apparent clutter within the shelves.
The curtain panels (from Ikea, right?) look good and seem to work well with your color palette. I wonder if it would have been more successful if they went to the floor as it bothers me that they end above the sofa.

Hi All,
Thanks so much for all of your comments, and the constructive criticism, I really appreciate it. Lots of very cool tips from people, I agree w/a lot of it, and I'm making some lists on how to simplify the visual clutter and edit some. For those of you who asked:
The sofa is the Klein sofa from Room & Board
The curtain panels are IKEA
The sofa pillows are a combo of Crate & Barrell (Green) and the new Plush Living pillows (black & white)
Also, I didn't submit my photos of kitchen & bedroom as I entered the sc Kitchen contest separately, but in retrospect, I should have included the kitchen pics w/the apartement entry, oops.
Thanks again, looking forward to seeing the upcoming pads.
