apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#6: Cassandra's Harmonious Heirloom

Name: Cassandra
Location: Oakland
Size & Type: 462 square foot studio

Favorite resource:

My grandparents and street corners. Every time I go to visit my grandparents they press another another family heirloom on me. I have also scored a few great pieces from street corners in the Bay Area, where everyone is always moving around all the time and can't always take their furniture with them.

Pitch:

My small is cool because I've matched the antique building with my antique furniture. The building was constructed in 1913 as luxury studio apartments for interns at the hospital across the street, complete with built-in dresser, table and chair, and lots of cabinets.

Pitch Cont'd:

The double doors in the main room oddly lead into a narrow closet, but they break up the monotony of a large beige wall (which I am not allowed to paint, sadly). My grandmother's bedroom set and quilts go perfectly with the original hardwood floors. I've managed to make this small space a comfortable home for myself and my little dog.

Your favorite element:

The antique touches in my apartment still give me a special little thrill even after living there for a year. I love the original wood floors and the built-in shelves and cabinets.

I think the bed is a little too "luau" for the rest of the room. I covet your kitchen storage -- and why no pic of your special sofa?

Sara48: It appears to be a studio with a huge kitchen and closet. There definitely isn't a separate bedroom.

I see a lot of potential with the individual pieces but not a lot of design ideas behind the overall layout. It's clean and tidy and I'm sure it's very comfortable, but it's not particularly interesting design-wise.

Seems wonderfully comfy & homey, but not particularly innovative from a design perspective.

I want those kitchen built-ins!!! I'd like to see the furniture with different fabrics/textiles. Not particularly exciting, but your love for it shines through, which is nice.

There are so many lovely architectural details in your studio that I'd love to see a design that allows them to shine a little more.

I love the kitchen built-ins and love the details of your apt. as well. I agree the bedspread is a bit intense but overall your place is definately full of character and things you love from those that mean the most!!

meh... maybe it's the pictures, but nothing stands out hear - would like to see more of the 'antique' building matched with antique furniture.

Too many 'hand-me-downs' and kitsch without any real piece coordination... With a few anchor pieces this place would look a lot more put together...

I think the look overall isn't cohesive, but I can see why you love those original wood floors. Possibly you could re-paint some of the older furniture to co-ordinate it more?

love the rocker,it's gorgeous. The bed was so much af a focal point, but not in a good way, that I didn't notice the rocker until I looked at the pics a second time.A simple coverlet would fix that. The built-ins are lovely too.

The bedspread is nice, reminds me of my grandma. Thanks for that - it nice to see a real lived in space, but not my style.

the bones of the apt are amazing.

& it could just be the pictures, but to me, it feels a bit thrown together. things clash. maybe if you thought about a mood or some sort of theme to keep to, it'd look better.

The photos don't really give a sense of cohesion in your space. I'm all for homey, but there just feels a bit disjointed to me.

Pictures are hung way too high. Green shag rug in bedroom looks a bit tacky.....and last but not least, way too much junk stuck on fridge door. Don't mean to be harsh, but this is why I couldn't give a good vote.

Also, you must be really tall if you are able to use your microwave that's on top of fridge!

I appreciate the history of your furnature but they are not being used to their full potential. Alot of the charm is being lost in the disconected design.

The apartment has great bones to work with: built-ins, hardwood flooring and that classic big gas stove. And I guess the fifty's furniture could fit in OK, but it needs more of a plan, a workable scheme to bring it together. A color scheme other than Christmas red and green would help. If the bedspread is part of your antique collection it may be worth featuring. The window treatment conflicts with it and the red (is that satin?) overpowers it to no real advantage.

Maybe rearranging the furniture so your guest seating does not make the space look so much like your bed is the focal point of the room would help it feel more like your home and not an old hotel room. Try putting the bed across the corner by the window and turning the back of the sofa to the foot of the bed; or turning the bed around 180 and away from the window and backing the couch up against the headboard.

Love your dressing bureau. The round green rug (minus the red curtain) would be snazzy in that area to pick up on the green in the shower curtain. Then replace the red curtain with a blue one that picks up on the shower curtain too.
