apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#7: Jennifer's Purposeful Pad

Name: Jennifer
Location: San Francisco
Size & Type: 422 sq. ft 1 bedroom urban rural in-law (rental)

Favorite resource:

Apartmenttherapy.com and the book shave been the most valuable resources in designing my little space.

Pitch:

My little in-law apartment is a comfortable, stylish, and peaceful place to relax. It was challenging to design the place with the constraints of the sliding glass door and the weird angles of the apartment. My apartment has an appropriate flow that uses every corner of the apartment.

Pitch Cont'd:

My favorite features are the wall-to-wall FLOR in the kitchen, the cozy loveseat that looks out to the garden, and the beautiful wood table that folds open and expands.

Also, I have been having fun sewing the slip covers for the mid-c chair, the bottoms of the curtains, and the matching TV cozy!

Your favorite element:

The great energy! Also the south-west facing sliding glass window.

I like the tv cozy, that was a great idea!

I like the living room, though from the photos the curtains seem a bit off. I didn't really get much of a sense of the bedroom. From what I see good use of space.

It might just be the flash, but is that white semi-gloss paint on the walls? If so, a switch to egg shell might be worthwhile...

It may just be the photos, but some of the art seems to be hung too high.

JV-- I totally agree. The tapestry should come down at least 9", and could even cover the oddly placed plug. And the two vertical pieces of art (very cool, by the way-- I'd love to see it up close) should come down at least a foot, if not 18" (hard to determine exactly b/c not sure of the scale). But all in all, a very cozy place. Lowering the art to eye level will make it even cozier.

The apartment looks warm and inviting. The green in the living room is very relaxing and grounding but maybe an addition of a bright color would add a bit of drama and color to the living area. TV cozy - very groovy. Even with the art pieces at high level, it does provide a feeling of open space even with the small space (using the scale you provided). All in all, seems like a very calm and peaceful place to come home to after a day at work.

I'm not fond of that type of green but I think its a lovely and welcoming space. Who wouldn't want to sit there and look at that garden?

As for the art height, yeah, it could come down further, all of it, but then I know a couple who are both over 6'2" and both he and his wife have their art hung high because that's their point of view, so I try to not get into that. They're the ones who are there the most and they don't like looking down at art.

I think Jennifer loves to sew and be one with nature and that is clearly reflected here. It looks like a place people want to take off their shoes and put their feet up. Nice job.

It definately shows your personality.
The Danish/Swedish furniture theme is pretty consistent and setss the mood.
And the bright colored tapestries and modern fabrics give great color throughout.
Great choice on having the apartment with large French windows and an outdoor patio.

A few elements to consider:
The stacked books while adding color kind of add clutter in the place.
The plants are great, if you could find a 48" or so tall planter, and throw some river rocks in it would really bring the outdoors in and create a spa like atmosphere.
Also, it seems everyones condo's have white walls!

The tall stack of books are incredible; how do they stay upright? Is there some kind of invisible shelving unit there? In general, this is one of my favorites; spare and modern without being overly "designer-y" - this feels like a place I could actually live in, as opposed to a place in which I would feel like I had to be dressed up all the time for the film crews. Kudos! The green is perfect, by the way. And talk more about the book stack thing. That's totally awesome.

nathan, my guess is that she's got a Sapien Bookcase. Except for the base, it totally disappears if you have enough books to fill it.

I love seeing books in these entries, but your tower of books makes me incredibly nervous. Especially in SF.

Nice job on the chair!

Your layout looks hard to work with- I think you did a great job arranging everything! Are the sliding doors the only doors?

I love that your home expresses your taste and is not sterile. So many AT contestants "clean uncluttered" homes, look like they belong on the pages of Domino or Home and Garden magazine, like sets.
I love books and have too many for my bookcase which is dark mahogany, and yes I've done a purge and donated. I'd love to know what is holding up your books. How tall is that bookcase? Can a sapien be that tall?
