Northwest #17: Dave and Rob's Small Dark and Handsome Apartment

Name: Dave and Rob
Location: San Francisco
Size: 579 sq. ft.
Rent/Own: Rented apartment

What is the advantage of SMALL? I love a good challenge. Small apartments are challenging in a good way because you have to be really creative with how you use your space, especially if you rent instead of own like we do...

What is the advantage of SMALL? CONT'D

...Sometimes challenging spaces lead to unexpected positive outcomes. Call me sadistic. But I consider that to be a plus.

What's your favorite resource for your home?

We both have a lot of books, art, and knick knacks so the full wall of book shelves we had custom made made it possible for us to combine all of our stuff in a fun and useful way. Plus, we can take it with us if we ever decide to move.

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home?

This place has character. We were both charmed by the apartment's quirky qualities when we first looked at it. The wood plank floors gives the place a sort of shabby yet cozy feel. The fact that the apartment had wooden floors and not wall to wall carpeting was probably the main reason why we decided to move in.

Love the orange and grey together. Looks great. Of course, you boys have to have a big TV... That is pretty ugly, but necessary, I suppose.

Wow!
Thank you all for the nice feedback!
Allow me to explain the floating head in the kitchen though.
It's a paper cutout that is part of our bulletein board. There are a lot of other things on that wall as well like notes, coupons, and a calendar. But, because the light coming through the adjacent window was so bright, it washed everything out except for the head because it had enough contrast. I kinda liked how mysterious and funny it looked in the photo so I decided to leave it in rather than crop it out.
And as for the green thing, its stool I made out of expanding foam and blocks of pine. The green part is solid foam so there is no storage in it. However, it is very usefull when we need to reach a book on the top shelf and it makes a great foot rest.
Thanks again to all of you for your comments. I'm sure you all know that small apartments are always a work in progress so keep the comments and suggestions comeing. Any criticism is greatly appreciated.

Not my style but pulled together nicely. Though I have to comment that those shelves going over the top of that old doorway aren't working for me. either it should fit the space perfectly or it shouldn't try to look like a built in. The gaps between the end of the shelf and the beginning of the molding bother me.

buyersremorse - the reason the bookcases cannot sit flush against the doorway is that the moulding on top of the door is wider at the very top than it is on the bottom; it is not a 90 degree angle. If you go back to that photo I think you'll notice it.

What an exquisite use of colour! The living room and the kitchen both look very restful, but in different ways. The kitchen's use of green, white and pink is very friendly.

But I'm disappointed that the Mysterious Floating Head is just an accident of photography. A disembodied head against a white wall, especially in this setting, is a really cool design idea.

congratulations on your gorgeous apartment! I really love it. Suggestions: I think a headboard would be a great finishing touch to the bedroom. Just a padded plywood board covered in gray fabric for instance, attached to the wall. Also, I would think that the light from the windows would bother you when watching TV: would it possible to switch the couch and TV positions? That way you could also look out the window when sitting on the couch instead of only always facing the wall.

A beautiful hodgepodge, the floating head is an intriguing surprise. First it scared me because I am haunted by the evil Anton Chiguer, but on closer look I realized it is not him after all and I enjoyed the mystery of it. A home that serves and expresses the residents. Great entry.

Lets see if I can answer a few more questions about our apartment:
• Like a dummy, I didn't keep any of the paint chips I used to select the colors for our apartment so I can't say what the names of the colors are. I do know that they are all Sherwin Williams colors. We painted our entire apartment in one gangbusters weekend. I guess that's ANOTHER advantage of having a small apartment.
• The lamps on the wall in the living room and the bed side lamps in the bedroom are all from West Elm and are part of their current collection.
• The desk is simply three Hon file cabinets with blank solid core doors. Rob has a slide out keyboard tray on his side so he can tuck his mouse and keyboard away whenever he wants. I do have a word of caution to anyone wanting to make a desk like this. You should definitely use solid core doors instead of hollow core doors. They are more expensive. But, there is just not enough support in hollow core doors and you'll have problems if you want to attach a keyboard tray to it. Also, be sure to either paint it, stain it, or put a few coats of polyurethane on it to protect the wood. It gets dirty fast.
• The book cases were custom built by a shop here in San Francisco that sells used books and unfinished pine book cases ( www.99sanchez.com ). I made a drawing for them and they built them to my specifications and delivered it all. I feel like it was worth spending a little extra money rather than trying to make readymade book cases work.
• Yes that thing on the kitchen table is a cookie jar. It's actually called a "cookie log" and has a little squirrel perched on top of it. My best friend got me that for my birthday one year. I think she said she got it at an antique shop in Alameda CA. The table is from Ikea. I like it because it's counter height so I don't have to bend down when I use it as work space. We have ZERO counter space in our kitchen so it comes in handy.
• And finally... the two TV's. I love that little yellow TV and how the color brightens up the room. I actually used to watch TV on that thing! I put it there next to the big TV in an attempt to draw attention away from the big TV. We watch a lot of movies so our big screen is important to us. Making a TV like that work is always a challenge. The little TV does do the trick for us at least. It's a fun little object to look at and I like the pairing of the old with the new.

Oh, and one more thing. I would LOVE to have a head board for our bed. I have some ideas for making my own. But if you all help us win this thing, we might be able to get something cool at Room & Board.

Thanks again!
D

I love your place guys, it's just my style! The colors are Great and the workspace area is awesome. The TVs are sleek too. The Tate bed from Crate & Barrel is one I've wanted to get for a while or I've thought of making a tufted headboard you could mount to the wall. Thanks for answering the questions, I was wondering about the West Elm lamps.

I'm always a sucker for how people live and how they put together their spaces, especially when it's of 2 men of a certain persuasion. ;-)

Very well done.

BTW, love both the old and new skool technique ya got going there w/ the TV's.

You're almost there.....just edit some of that 'lined up" stuff everywhere......sleek it out a bit.......buy some cool covered boxes for all of those shelves and put all that stuff in them.
Paint the wall behind the tv a non-yellow shade
Buy just one big super cool pillow (search for juuuuust the right one...)for the bed and get rid of that "I'm at Macy's and I like lots of little pillows lined-up-in-order" look

And get one super sleek lamp (CB2 has that rip-oof of the arco yet in a bright green, cute) for the living room
Cheers,
fellow-sf'er
