What is the advantage of SMALL? CONT'D

...I also love the smallness because I live alone, and it's cozy and warm and is the perfect amount of space for me!

What's your favorite resource for your home?

IKEA: When you mix and match from different collections, as well as adding pieces from Craigslist (or things you've inherited from family members), it doesn't look totally IKEA-sterile.

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home?

The color - the mint walls and daffodil doors/trim make it feel like springtime all year round; and the magenta rug and multi-colored pillows really make it feel homey.

I, for one, could have done without the kitchen shot or the bathroom. They're not doing ANYTHING for you. This one's just OK for me. Love the wall color, but it's not being taken full advantage of.

I love the wall color in the lead shot. And the rainbows make me happy.

Kim,

Can we be friends? I love Apples to Apples and Rainbow Brite.

I also love that blue paint on the walls.

eh. Sorry - it's a bit on the college side for me, with no unity in color themes, or styles. Tie dye should never be a part of decor. The furniture and decorative knick knacks feel very Pier 1 meets Kmart. The kitchen should have more personality. White appliances with white cabinets are boring.

I love the kitchen shot - so crisp and clean and what I wish my kitchen looked like. However, the rest of the place falls a little short. Its cosy and small, but not 'cool' in the sense of creating solutions to small space restraints. I would have preferred a second Ikea couch like the 2-seater: off the ground and not too bulky. Mismatching the light & airy 2-seater with the big clunky 3 seater makes the space feel mish-mashy. Using the same sofa creates unity and makes the space appear larger.

This looks like a great place to start from, but hasnt arrived yet.

Some entries are criticized for being too college, and then others are criticized for being too full of designer pieces. I wish we were seeing more happy mediums between the two!

Thanks for the comments so far! I know my apartment is not in the same league as the more designer/fancy ones...I just thought someone should represent those of us out there who subscribe to AT but don't necessarily fit in to the typical kind of "cool" found within its articles and contests. I know there must be lots of readers out there like me, who have perfectly lovely homes but don't always feel like they can identify with the common aesthetic found at Apartment Therapy.

And since when are photographs of flowers "college"? :-)

Happy apartment-ing,
Kim

I love this apartment; it's what my apartment aspires to be but definetly falls short of this one. Maybe it's because I am a college student. It would be wonderful to come home to a fun place like this after a day full of classes and studying.

Kim, hear ya. It's hard because people expect to see something beyond what they see on a daily basis when they are looking at entries. Something innovative and interesting, beyond just the interest at looking at pads that aren't theirs (which is fun, so thanks for entering and allowing us to take a look in your life). Your pad is nice though. Absolutely colorful and cozy.

Kim, I think your place is lovely. What paint did you use for that sweet and refreshing mint color?

The paint is good ole (cheap) Behr. The folks at Home Depot mixed me up a batch of the mint, and when (after painting the living room) I thought it would be too much in the bedroom, mixed me up a lighter version of the same color. I used Behr in the kitchen (and on the doors/window frames) as well, though I went for eggshell finish, since I was told that would be easier to clean (in case of, ahem, splattered spaghetti sauce or wayward cookie dough).

If you want the actual color names, just email me (kimskitchensink@gmail.com) and I'll look 'em up (they're on the cans, I'm sure)

college = 90's = tie dye and displaying empty wine bottles = the set from Friends.

liked it, its cute and cosy. Always love seeing another knitter. Are they two beside tables behind the couch...nice touch along with the shelf.

I think the place is very personable, and lived in. Which is what I personally like to see. I don't quite do the 'magazine layout' look. It may look nice, but give me a place you can sit down, lean back and have a glass of wine (like this one), and I'll give you my vote!

It's fun and very typically Berkeley....

Makes me yearn for my days at UCB...or Cal as they call it now....

I like it...

SUPER COOL! I LOVE IT!!
Love the candy colors in the livingroom and the white of the kitchen. Love your Pyrex dish too.

I LOVE color and can totally appreciate your aesthetic. I think it looks very cheerful and pretty. I would suggest that you bring some of that color and excitement into the kitchen, it looked very white and bland in comparison to your fun living room and bedroom! Nice job, though.
