What is the advantage of SMALL? I like the idea that I'm taking up less space on the planet. I get to surround myself with only things that are beautiful or useful and I don't buy unnecessary stuff...

What is the advantage of SMALL? CONT'D

For me, one of the keys to happiness is owning less possessions; but I'm not willing to give up all worldly comforts. Living in a small space is my solution for owning less without having to move to a commune.

What's your favorite resource for your home?

Since interior design trends follows fashion trends I like to read fashion magazines to see what's current. I then try to translate those looks into my home. Vogue and Elle are always cutting edge.

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home?

I love the bed nook. My one hesitation for living in a studio was that feeling like your bed is in the living room. Putting my bed in the walk-in closet allows me to comfortably live in a small apartment and have the sleeping area feel like it's in a different space.

I love your bed nook! Good use of space and color. I think some art with real color in it would look amazing over your couch. Other than that, I really like this apartment... it's tiny, but well thought out and put together

gotta give a huge thumbs-up to a fellow bed-nook-sleeper! that was my favorite photo-- i love the white, blue and orange accents. not so in love with the brown couch and brown things hanging over it-- maybe go for something a bit punchier above the couch?

overall, super cute studio!

also, i really love the shot of the dining table all decked out!

That bed nook is the cutest thing I've ever seen! Perhaps you could paint it a contrast color to make it pop, or do some sexy drapey curtains on either side.

And where is your dining table from?

I really don't like the blue in this apartment, but I am in LOVE with everything else: the bedroom, the tables, the lighting, the use of space - but the blue just doesn't fit in this space for me. I'm torn on this one.

You get an automatic Super-Cool vote from me for your bedroom, but I love your dining room too. The triangle-tables are great, and I love the way white becomes an accent color for you.

Also, I love that your bed has a side-exit!

I can't help thinking your place will only get better and better with time - but it's already super-cool in my book.

Finally--an apartment that is actually small and cool in its use of small space! This contest has been pretty disappointing this year--few have really been showing off cool solutions to the challenges of living small, and this one does. Love it!

This a great example of what the contest is about. You have distinct areas and are able to use all the space without having a million pieces of furniture or lots of stuff. Not a big fan of orange but here it works great.

This is a very nice little place, but feels like it's just been moved into and a lot of unpacked boxes are hiding in the hallway. There's no stereo, computer, or any sort of desk or stand for such equipment of any kind in these shots. Is that part left out or simply absent? Who doesn't have a computer at home in this day and age? There are also no kitchen shots though there is a kitchen in the layout. I'd also be interested in seeing the state of that walk-in closet.

It looks great but feels very "staged" to me...as if this isn't what it would normally look like.

Your floor-plan shows a kitchen. Really? I don't see where you'd fit one in 370 square feet.

Your bed looks a bit like a refrigerator. I guess you like walking on your bed to get to the shelf behind? I know my cats like that.

Hm. Blues, oranges and greens predominate. Daring. For the color impaired.

You've done so well for such a small space, but I'd really like to see more photos. I feel like I'm not getting the whole picture here.

One thing, though: I feel like if your wall color was maybe 2 or 3 shades darker (ie. a true navy) it would take your space to a whole different level of amazingness.

I love the blue and white combination. Reminds me of the many images of Greece, with the white buildings, blue trim and blue skies and sea. Do an image search at Google for:
Greece blue white

Good to see something that is both Small and Cool.

I love the bed nook and the use of bold colors, but may I ask why you submitted two nearly identical vignette pictures of the dining table while not submitting anything of the kitchen? This omission is precisely what kept me from rating it supercool - you did a little too much staging, without really showing us how you live here. The only spot that feels really lived in is the awesome bed nook, but that is more of an architectural feature than anything else. Still, you've done a great job making 370 sq. ft. seem a lot larger. I just wonder where the laundry gets folded and kept, and what personal items you keep in your space.

i would have loved a couple of pics that showed an actual overview of the apt. (and what about the kitchen? where are your clothes?) but i still voted super cool, and a large part of the reason why is the bed in the walk-in closet.

to me, this contest isn't just about whose place *looks* better, but is also be about (clever and original) use of the space. there hasn't been a lot of that is this year's entries, sadly.

Hi
What a good effort for such a small space.
Very bold move using that blue.

Would you consider creating an L-shaped living space?
ie: moving the sofa under the 2 windows, then adding additional seating?
Unlike the others, I'm not crazy about the dining set-up.
I know it's a rental, but what about a 'bench' of sorts, along the dining window with a table and end chairs to complete it?
It would be a cozy nook to connect with the kitchen.
Being somewhat larger, it could also function as a work place too.

Cheers.

QUESTION RE: BED NOOK

QUESTION RE: BED NOOK

Whenever I see beds like this (including high platform sleepers) it always makes me wonder - how do you change the sheets???

It is a complete hassle? I prefer flat sheets to fitted as I think you get a smoother sheet and it rucks up less = better night's sleep.

Presumably with a bed like that flat sheets are a total no-no.

I'm just trying to imagine even putting on a fitted sheet - at the top end wouldn't you have your weight on the bed.

Plus how do you keep it clean - like down the sides of the matress etc - must be a real dust trap which can't be good for sleeping. How often do you need to take out the matress for a full clean?

It looks pretty but I suspect it must be deeply impractical.

Genuinely interested to know . . .
