What is the advantage of SMALL? CONT'D

...Also, I don't accumulate a lot of stuff, which makes me feel light.

What's your favorite resource for your home?

Craig's list furniture. I've found a lot of gems for cheap on the site.

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home?

I really like having a separate office. I work from home a lot, so this it is great to have which such small square footage.

I love that the floor plan looks like an abstract representation of a factory building...... or maybe its because im in an oddly abstract mood today!

nice job!

wondering if the livingroom wouldn't feel a lot bigger without a rug there. maybe it's one for the theorists, i know many people love area rugs and complain when there aren't any. but i believe it would all feel a lot more cohesive then. on a micro-level most seems nice amd fine here, but somehow the place as a whole doesn't do it for me.

Your couch is GINORMOUS for that space. I have the same problem -- maybe that's why I notice it. Everything else looks super, tho! Great colours, beautiful mirrored cabinet (that I'm now lusting for). Good job!

I just didn't get enough sense of the entire space -- would have loved a peek at the office. Some nice pieces, though.

I am sorry, but I think the scale is off in a lot of places. The bedside tables looks rather dwarved; the two side chairs look much smaller than the Barcelona and your navy sofa. The door(?) behind it looks too small beside the beefed-up mantel (I realise there is nothing you can do about that). Also, the standing lamp behind/beside the sofa gets drowned in that corner. That mirrored console also looks too big for your hallway. I am sorry to be so critical, but I really think that, in a small space, one needs to be really adept at picking furniture at the right scale (though I know that is a much easier said than done)...

It feels like elderly people live here. Stuffy, outdated and not much style.

nice place, but not too competition worthy in my book. but i'm not sure if my expectations are too high. i don't expect expensive stuff but just something beyond (or well beyond) pads that i see that my ordinary joe schmoe friends have. but, in that light, i do like what you've done. just seems not too outstanding or innovative or interesting.

Wow, I can't believe how fun this is. Keep the comments and suggestions coming.

Wall hanging: I designed and created this by attaching 2" square white paper cards together with tiny metal rings.

Color of bedroom: Restoration hardware silver sage

Couch: I tried a loveseat, but it looked tiny, and there wasn't enough seating for parties. The couch is fairly small scale, 80" and looks pretty good. It's a really small living room with a lot of angles which makes it a decorating challenge.

Thanks!

Nicely done, but it's hard to get a sense of the place. The pictures for this contest have to be more closely controlled in order for the viewers to get a sense of the apartments and to be fair to all the entrants. Five pictures--make them specific. Living room (or area), bedroom (or area) , kitchen (or area) , bathroom, whimsy. And maybe add picture # 6 of the entrance. And, please, please, please, make the floor plans the first visual. Then we all can get a sense of what we're looking at.

I had a hard time wrapping my head around the space too, and it didn't help that the floorplan wasn't labeled. Some of the things don't seem to jive, like the chairs in the living room, and I kind of agree with whoever said that it didn't look "competition worthy." However, it looks cozy and I wouldn't mind being invited there for a party. :)

This apartment has alot going for it, like those beautiful wood floors and the interesting fireplace...
...but it also has the problem that many new developments have with apartments that are chopped up into too many tiny rooms for the space and unnecessarily angled walls.

The widely varied paint colors chosen don't make this small apartment any more cohesive - Everything seems so random. There's no common thread through the rooms - it's another schitzophrenic apartment.

I love the bedroom, especially the color (rarely see purple used so well), but the living room seems mismatched to me. I disagree that the sofa is too big - I think fewer, bigger pieces are better than smaller ones. The chairs don't fit well with the sofa or the fireplace and I'm probably have only two chairs rather than 3.

Here are my "sources":

Sconces: Ikea

Couch: Estate sale, it's the real thing! (from the 60s)

Wall Hanging: hung from a metal rod. (each side of the square has a metal ring on it.)

Other furniture is from Ikea and Craigs. Bet you can guess which furniture is Ikea. :))

Thanks for the constructive criticism. Keep it coming!

I loved your couch despite its size, and then when I read it's true vintage I think it's totally worth a little sacrifice on proportion! You won't live here forever, I assume, so someday you'll be really glad you bought it. I also like the purple upholstered bed, and I think the place has a nice warm modern feel. The mirrored chest feels a little out of place.

Even with a small space it's difficult to convey a space with 6 images. This has been an underlying theme. Perhaps A.T. will change the rules next time.
Angela, you have a nice place and a great attitude.

this space has an uncanny appeal. while i dont think it deserves to necessarily win any design contests, it is still very very attractive. not perfect, but endearing. charming, lived in, homey, personal. cool, but not super cool, which might actually be just right...

I thought I posted a comment on this one before - but its not showing. Basically reiterating what people have said already:

Lots of different styles coming together and not in a way that works. You've got International style with the Barcelona-esque chair, next to Scandinavian with the coffee table, and a Mod couch, next to a Regency mirrored credenza, and a Modern bed, with faux ethnic coverlet, modern tables, and weirdly country-ish lights.

For the livingroom I'd lose the Barcelona thing - not because i dislike it, but because it doesnt go. I'd bring one of the side chairs over from the window, or get another Danish side chair. I'd also lose the mirrored credenza thing - they always look out of place unless the WHOLE space is over-the-top Regency styled.

I'm feeling a bit out numbered here in that I really like your space. It feels comfy to me. =) I maybe would consider a different chair than the barcelona for your livingroom, but I know how it goes when you have a piece that you just can't part with even if it's not perfect.... Then again though, it ties in closer with the mirrored credenza, so you have a couple styles going on, but hec, if you like it, rock it!

Hey everyone,

Angela here. The bedspread is from Urban Outfitters. I've also used their bedspreads for curtains in the livingroom, which you can't really see. Very affordable, and a nice cherry blossom print.

Books: The books are in the office, which I edited out of the photos, but I see now I should have showed the kitchen and office from comments.

Angela

PS. I'm keeping my furniture for now, :))

I'm voting cool, but only because the floor plan didn't give a sense of the place and also the group of images didn't give a good sense of the place.

HOWEVER, I actually love the living room. Individual, personal, and tasteful.

Cute, livable place here.
You're going in a good direction.
I don't even mind some of the odd mix here.

However that gorgeous expensive floor is insulted with that, (purposeless) rag-style area rug.
Do you really need one at all?
