Who was your favorite entry and why?

Rob liked Midwest #11: Lisette's Pied a Terre which is one of the other finalists. He said he really liked the living room because of the sense of color and the nice feeling he got from the natural light.
I really liked East #6: Matthew's Gallery even though his entry didn't make it to the next round. I like it when people surround themselves with interesting objects that say something about who they are. I really liked how he styled his living room. The mismatched pillows turned at an angle and the wall of super cool art blew me away.

What's your next improvement?

I for one was inspired by MANY of this years Small Cool entries. I saw so many creative solutions for the problems that small home dwellers are faced with. I want to try to incorporate some of them into my own place.
My Biggest thing in our apartment right now are our bathroom and kitchen fixtures. I'd love to change them out but that's not really and option since I rent.
So...
What's next? As much as the warm grey color in the bedroom has served us well all these years, I think it's time for a change. I want the room to be a little crisper and fresher feeling. Plus I have a bunch of cool ideas for a bed frame. I want to make one that folds out into an additional work surface.
As for Rob, I think he's done with the decoratin' thing for now.

Um... why is this one a finalist? I didn't see a single thing that made me say "wow". I would think it a nice enough place, and give kudos for some nice elements, but winning 2008? Nope.

Tell me about that ceiling light in the living room? Where did you get it or how did you make it?

Hi Nate:
I built the hanging light pretty much from scratch. The only parts that I didn't make were the two bullet lamp shades. I salvaged those from and old busted desk lamp. The inspiration for the light came from vintage modern light fixtures of course (There's a really cool ceiling light fixture at the Bottom of the Hill club here in SF that I've always loved and wanted something like it in my home.) I was also inspired by the designer David Weeks' lights. Since his lights are thousands of dollars and pretty much custom made to order, I figured I would try making one of my own and give it my own twist.

To answer everyone else's questions:

The plant is some sort of grapeless grape vine. I wish I could tell you what the actual name of it is. That thing loves life. It's nice taking a shower and having some green in there with you.

The gun is a toy gun. We just thought it was a fun thing to have there.

I'm not sure what to say about YakkoDot's question.

YakkoDot's question should just be ignored

Love your place -- Congratulations!

I was wondering what part of the city are you in and what style of building you live (ie. 6 unit, victorian, etc.) No, not stalking for that awesome living room light fixture! I am a San Franciscian as well and I am often curious as to the styles of apartment floor plans that seems to stay common from building to building in certain areas but remain within specific neighborhoods.

Overhead lamp is fantastic. I love how you can swing it around to suit your purposes... and presumably rotate down for spot lighting on an object or for reading, etc.

But, PLEASE find out the Brand/Color of the paints you used in Bedroom and Kitchen. Thanks & Congrats!

I read someplace or another, that a home without books
is like a body without a soul. Your home has soul, and is a WOW
factor..

Dave, thank you for the explanation of the light fixture in your living room. It sounds like I am not the only one who is in love with it. I too live in SF, and will go by Bottom of the Hill and get a look at the light fixture. Also, print out a picture of yours and see if I can replicate it.

You might consider mass producing them!

I love the office. It looks perfect for two people. How could I duplicate the desk/file cabinet setup?
