Small Cool 2009: J & R's Redwood "Earthquake Shack"
Little Division #07

thumbs up

Name: J & R
Location: San Francisco, California
Size: 650 square feet

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? Reclaimed redwood cathedral ceiling. The installed skylights add so much beautiful natural light, the wood keeps the place homey and warm.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? The house is made up of two 1906 "Earthquake Shacks"- tiny redwood shacks built after the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, joined together (the FEMA Trailers of their day!) Months later when rebuilding began, people transported the shacks to properties throughout the city and called them home- my place is made up up two 300 sq ft shacks put together, along with a small modern addition.

In such a small space each piece of furniture has to be picked with the utmost care, I liked the architectural details - the redwood interior and ceiling, the tile in the kitchen, the soapstone counters- and didn't want the furniture to steal any attention away from these details. So the place is minimally furnished, with select pieces, to keep the attention on the openness of the space and the warmth of the architectural details. The challenge was to find furniture that works in the space but that lets the design and architecture be the focus.

I'm all shook up! Imagine, this was the 1906 version of a FEMA trailer. So much for progress!

Wow, this is a great place, and I like it even more after reading the description of how it was built! It has a very spacious feel, and it seems like a very calm, relaxing environment.

I love this space, but it causes me to wonder if the contest should do separate awards for 'decor' and 'architecture'. I feel pain for the renters in this class competing with those ceilings and light fixtures.

Great space though. This would be my pick for the architecture award so far.

I love the space! It was a wise move to keep the decor simple, but I agree with Matilde that the main attraction here is the amazing architecture, not the furnishings or decoration.

I concur- the apartment is GORGEOUS, but I'm not sure how much I am learning about what's small and cool, except maybe the extreme editing. Beautiful home, though!

Almost *too* spare, but the history behind the space is great. Very airy for 600 sq ft!

Love the space and agree it might be a tad too spare but one thing does bother me and that's the bathroom all the way over on the other side of the great room, what if you have to pee in the middle of the night?

If it were me, I'd have moved the kitchen to where the bathroom is now, extending it into the room a bit with dining area and put the small bath near your bedroom so it's just a quick out the room and around the corner, rather than all the way across the large great room.

The minimalism isn't quite to my taste, but I completely understand your desire to emphasize those amazing ceilings! I just love the tile in the bathroom though, and am incredibly jealous of that gorgeous patio off the bedroom.

Captivating example of reclaimed wood! Modern, clean lines meeting a livable, organic space. Stunning! Love the red in the kitchen and the blue in the bath. Beautiful place. Thank you for sharing...

Hi, I made a documentary on the Earthquake shacks in 2006. Shot in many restored shacks and met people who grew up in them...Yours is truely one of the most beautiful ones. I wish I had known! Congratulations on owning a beautiful piece of history. I hope you win!

I just bought a Bertazzoni stove - can you tell me if that's the matching range hood? I'm looking for a simple stainless hood that can convert to a recirculating system (I can't vent). Thanks. Great place!

While I understand the ceiling is exquisite and you don't want the furniture to overpower it, it seems like the lack of furniture/objects makes the place feel a little too bare and cold. There's plenty of homes on here that have amazing architectural details and they've been able to make them the focal point without sacrificing some personality in the space.

love your bathroom.

planning on putting in a glass wall divider but had thought of mounting it on the shower half or in the middle. can you comment on how this holds up for wetness and cleanup vs. the other arraignments?
