Small Cool 2009: Jenny's Portland Light
Little Division #38

thumbs up

Who Lives There: Jenny and her boyfriend
Location: Portland, Oregon
Size: 740 square feet

What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? The tall ceilings and windows that let in tons of light to our narrow apartment (very important in Portland).

Give Jenny a THUMBS UP if you think this home belongs in the finals!

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? There is not a ton of storage space so things were consolidated, organized and everything seems to now have a place and a reason. Many things that I used to store in a closet like hats, boots, etc. became part of the overall design of a space. Especially in the kitchen where there is not much hidden storage. Everything is on display and honestly, its easier to find things when they aren't crammed in the back of a cabinet or closet somewhere.

Very pretty. Love the living room... so much light!

Also love your kitchen sink. Do you know where it's from?

Beautiful! I think you should try and cover up the border on the fireplace...it doesn't go with the rest of your decor. As for the rest of your apartment, it has this really great classic and modern mix- feels like a home. I love the simplicity and anti-clutter, the old school fan, all of your natural earthy tones, the globe, all the plant life. The living room is my favorite!

Your living room is a dream with the beautiful old architecture.

A couple of things I love...
Great use of the plants in the living room. In Portland, even when it's dreary, at least you have the green to cheer you up.

I like the shelving with the apple crates...great storage with character.

Also, I'm curious about the wine bottles in the fireplace. It looks amazing. Are those empty or are have you actually turned it into your little wine cellar?

You really made your open kitchen work. The open shelving looks clean and crisp and the tea kettle is the perfect accent piece.

Beautiful home...beautiful city. Good luck in the contest.

I absolutely love the wine storage inside the fireplace. I'm sure it's not the first time someone thought of this approach, but it's the first time I've ever seen it and I love it. Going into the mental inspiration box. :)

And don't cover up the border on the fireplace! It's a beautiful period detail.

Indeed a very nice space and unless it's an optical illusion of sorts due to the camera angle, the wicker chair looks like it's right up against the molding around the living room opening. If so, I'd pull the chair forward, even if just a couple of inches because as it is now, it looks like it's right up against the woodwork.

Otherwise, nice use of the space indeed.

thanks for all the lovely comments! i love seeing what people think of the place.

the sink might be from ikea but i'm not sure.

I didn't like the fireplace tile at first but its growing on me. If I owned the apartment, I would perhaps replace it and pretty sure its not the original tile.

the wine bottles are empty. Unfortunately the gas fireplace does not work so we figured stacking wine bottles and perhaps eventually lighting them from the inside might be a cool effect.

Very nice apartment. The designer must have real talent. I especially like the amount of light and the use of colors in such a small space. Portland is such a wounderful place to live and work.

Your home is lovely, Jenny!
Would you mind sharing where you got the wall art in the first photo? It looks like possibly a stretched canvas...?

caitlyn, the art on the dining room wall is a marushka. i found it at a consignment store. if you google the word, you can find more information about marushka designs.

Beautiful! And it looks like a warm home instead of cold showroom. Very nice job. I love the paint in the room with the globe. Can you tell me the what it is? I actually tried to paint my room that color but my choice was so pale that the room actually looks white - I was going for the effect that you got.

Thanks.

Very charming apartment! I love the layout, but just wonder why they put 2 doors in the bathroom... means you have no room for storage in there I expect.

Love your place. I also live in P-town. Is the red entryway desk/console table from ikea (malm)?

I want something like that for my place in red, but they don't have it at the Ikea here in town anymore...

sorry, i'm not sure what the paint color is. It was there before we moved in.

The red desk is a west elm parson's desk i found on craigslist. I don't think the store sells the red color anymore. I use it as my sewing table and so far its been great!

I wasn't so sure about your place until I saw the kitchen... I love it! It looks like it belongs in a pretty little cottage on the beach!
