What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home? The apartment building I live in was built in 1925 and my favorite element would have to be the architectual details of this period: tray ceilings, picture rail molding, original bathroom tile and fixtures, subway tile in kitchen (painted over unfortunately).

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced in furnishing your small home? The biggest challenges furnishing my apartment were money and size. I basically moved in a one bedroom's worth of mish-mashed furniture into one room. The apartment is furnished with random hand-me-down's, thrifted finds, Ikea and Craigslist pieces. Do to the "dollhouse" cuteness of the apartment the furniture manages to look make-do but over time I plan to switch out pieces in order to evolve and simplify the overall aesthetic.

I love the space you've created. It looks a tad crowded with the seating, but I wouldn't give up any of those pieces so a tight squeeze would be worth the compromise.
BTW, if you want to "switch out" that rose chair...I'll be on a month long roadtrip this summer, I can come pick it up. ;)

It is a tad crowded, it is Patti P.'s home after all. I love the kitchen. There are always compromises to be made in a small space.

Looks like an apartment in the Marina, many of them have that same kitchen style.

I think this place is adorable (in a good way). Perhaps a little crowded, but I think you do a good job of seperating your spaces. The "living" area has a rug, but the "bedroom" doesn't, which visually seperates the two.
You've got some great pieces of furniture, so I don't blame you for not wanting to give them up.
I do wonder why you have two "desk" areas (one next to the kitchen and one at the foot of the bed). Would it be possible to cut down to one desk area and utilze the other space for a seating/dining area or dressing area?
Also, where do you eat? I don't see a "dining" area anywhere.
Thanks for sharing your home with us!

i think that's a vanity at the foot of the bed. and a girl needs that.

Very feminine and lovely. Great details: the crotched pillows, white cabinetry along the kitchen.
I would use the "office space" as a sleeping area, curtain it off. Perhaps the bed you have now is too large for a sleeping area, but then you could place a small dining table in the main living area and have some privacy.

I love all the vintage furniture and the bright kitchen! I would probably wither up if I lived in such a small apartment... (says the midwest girl! ha)

this looks so much smaller than the 300 sf apartment shown earlier. something about the layout is off I think

I agree about re-thinking the layout as the bed is so dominant. Very pretty and nicely done though.

Agree with the others that there does seem to be too much furniture (or the particular pieces appear too heavy and big for the space). Is a couch and both chairs--as awesome as they all are--necessary? I have a way bigger and separate living room and only own a couch and one chair!
Also a bed a vanity seems too much for a studio (maybe a fold-away vanity shelf-table combo like the ones AT featured a week or so ago would help open up floor space?) Then the desk in the office area could perhaps be moved out to the living space and the bed tucked into the office and then curtained or screened off?
The kitchen is darling, by the way. So much great architectural detail! I would love to see a few splashes of bright color there--perhaps to accent that great vintage chair?

The mere apartment by itself sans furnishings reminds me a lot of a similar vintage studio I lived in for 6 years and it was about 450Sq Ft at best with the main room at 14.5x15Ft with a walk in closet space that originaly also housed a murphy bed that flipped around on its center axis and then dropped down however the door remained but the mechanism was removed so it provided a great spot for my chest. :-)
What you've done here is fantastic, as noted, a tad crowded but not too bad and it might have worked a little better if you had a murphy bed or hidabed to help ease the crowding but otherwise you have done great work on the space, much better than I did at the time I lived mine almost a decade ago.
I did get a decent futon and frame that during the day can be a couch, by night it was my bed and yes, I still sleep on it to this day. It's due a replacement - eventually but it helped to keep the space from being visually crowded w/ the other stuff I had.
Again, great job

Hi all,
Thanks for the kind comments. I agree with everyone that it is a bit crowded, time to purge... sometimes it just takes a friendly nudge.
Addressing a few comments:
-Square footage of the main room is a tad over 13X13 feet, so teeny tiny. My bathroom, entry hall, kitchen, office area and two large walk in closets add all that extra square footage.
-I have two tray tables (they double as night stands)...I just grab the nearest one to eat on in the sitting area. I had my huge new desk before I moved in so I sacrificed a dining area for office area. The pink desk in the main room is my vanity. It's a vintage lucite find that I'll have a hard time giving up, but never say never.
- I cook a lot so I can't picture using the office area as the sleeping area as someone suggested.

Very cute! Our apartment is 900 sq ft and the only thing I dislike is the lack of storage. It looks like you have quite a bit though. :-)

I admire you for living in SF. It's not easy to find reasonable housing. This is a nice place. I would get rid of the clock. It doesn't fit. Any possibility of putting the bed in the big closet? I know some people in SF have done that with those big closets. We have friends who used theirs in Berkeley for a nursery.

I guess priorities are very subjective.
. . . a vanity and office but no dining table?
to each her own.

I'm in love with your grandfather clock and the rosy chair--my parents had two of them in blue--what a lovely home!

I think Patti has done a beautiful job! I love the color palette and how you've managed to mix it up with textures and patterns. And while it does feel a little crowded, it's not sloppy and everything seems easily movable if needed. I love your couch, pink tweed chair, clock and bedding. I wish there was another photo of the kitchen and bathroom.
And from one single chick to another, I have sacrificed a dining table and I don't think it's a loss! And I would gladly trade my 1,000 sq ft apartment for your 430 for those details any day! So jealous!

I love it! I like that you have distinct living areas. The bed looks so comfy, and the kitchen is just great.

I would push the bed right up against the wall and lose one of the night tables, giving you another foot or so, and lose the vanity, or put it in the walk in closet, and create another "room" for dressing. You have LOTS of seating options for such a small space, I understand that you are stuck with all this furniture, and I think that in general you have a sweet home. The kitchen totally rocks.
