Contemporary shows up in the over-sized drum shade (almost the same diameter as the table it hangs over!). An industrial touch is made with the steel-and-wood swivel seats used as dining chairs. Both of these overlay a comfortable cottage style of traditional wood furnishings with worn painted finishes. Take away just one of these elements, and we think the room wouldn't be as successful as it is now.
Do you mix styles in your own home? What's a good mix for you?

Does anyone have any information on where I could find chairs similar to those pictured in this photo? I am utterly smitten!

I second that!

Is it just me or is that drum shade just a bit too much? I'd size it down by 20%.

I like this, really I do, but it looks like the drum shade
swallowed up all of the guests!

it's just you. that huge scale is what makes it.

I hope to create such a success in my loft! And the drum shade is perfect. It works for the scale of the room. Any smaller and the room would be boring.

I would hang the shade a "tad" bit higher. But then again, I'm fairly tall and low hanging lights make me nervous...

If you're looking for new, these chairs at Restoration Hardware are close, and are about $400/ea. Vintage are much cheaper, if you can find them, less than $100.

Anyone have a suggestion on where to find an affordable version of that drum shade? I'm looking for something large and in charge for our dining area....

Here's my problem, Apartment Therapy-ers. This site is designed to highlight good, diverse design. The majority of the time, it does just that. However, as I read post after post, month after month, everything is starting to the look the same. Is it just me, or is everything this perfect mix of MCM classics (vintage or new reproductions) rustic French/Tuscan/Scandinavian farm antique international bohemian ikea. Granted, I LOVE this mish mash, but it looks formulaic after you've seen it a trillion times. Does anyone else feel this way??

Hurly,
This looks very Pottery Barn to me. I like it, but, yes, it does look familiar. I don't know how you'd avoid that though. The completely off-the-wall places look predictably junk-store-ish and the new conceptual designs are predictably impractically minimal.

OK, LOL, I didn't predict this one...

You have to admire their creativity, though! Very funny...LOL as well.

@HollyDolly - I just purchased a similar fixture from www.BobbyBerkHome.com called Meridian by LightsUp!. I got the Large size, which with an 18"-diameter is pretty darn big, but there's an even bigger one called Grande. Another fixture by the same company called Weegee is closer to the proportions of the fixture in this picture, but it has an open bottom, which I didn't like. They're not cheap, but a very good value, I think.
