So why is it that when you see them in catalogues they almost always house just a small alarm clock, a single book and an elegant bud vase? We call that The Fantasy Bedside Table. Does anyone actually live like that?
On a scale of 1 - 5, with 1 being The Fantasy Bedside Table and 2 being The Table that Runneth Over,

Mine is close to the fantasy, and here's how I do it... next to the bedside table is a small 12x12 cube table that I use to stack my bedside books and magazines, a box of tissues, etc. It actually looks cute like that, and at a glance, my night stand always looks clutter free!
Mine's pretty close to the fantasy, only because it's so darn small. It's actually a bookshelf, and all there's room for is a small lamp, clock-radio, box of kleenex & a glasses case.
I hope we're going to do a Top 10 Bedside table or something because I want to see what people use. I currently use some Ikea nightstands but I want to get rid of those and replace them with deep but short floating shelves. Think Ikea Lack shelves, but shorter. Problem is, I can't find shelves yet that are that perfect size AND are going to be sturdy enough to hold all the essentials. Who can help me??
Watches, jewelry and ipods should stay on the dresser. They are asking to get knocked off on the bedside table. And leaving your sex toys out is just kinda tacky. The most you can get away with leaving out is maybe a nice looking lube bottle. On most days the table should hold only:
A discrete clock
A water glass
One book
A Phone
An interesting object or two
I have a 12" PowerBook on a Griffin iCurve. My blue iPod mini and two sets of earphones. A silver dish in the shape of hands. A lamp. On the other bedside table there is a lamp. A teddy bear. A rag doll. A stuffed dog. A buckwheat pillow. (the toys reside on the bed during the day. The iPod has lots of audible.com books. During the day the bedside tables are pretty close to fantasy.
Ha. We're pretty far from the fantasy. Let's see:
three to four books, minimum,
hand lotion,
hand cream for allergies,
small metallic-y lamp from Target,
whatever jewelry I forgot to take off before bed (this now involves a small red lacquer bowl to hold it all),
old issue of Domino,
box of tissues,
super cool alarm clock from Oregon Scientific (I love it so much I linked it in my name).
Husband's side has all remotes, CDs and a stereo as well as his vitamins etc. and another little metallic-y lamp. At least the lamps match!
Mine is usually closer to the fantasy...except when I'm bookshopping. Then I usually have four or five books piled up on the table with a few more on the floor next to a stack of magazines and/or newspapers.
But when the book is good, there's an alarm clock, box of tissues with a cover, the one good book, phone and glasses.
Finally, I am pretty close! I use the 15" sq. Drew bedside table that was featured on AT a while back. Love it and wish I could find another. At Z Gallerie I found a 15" sq. blk patent topper for a bit of glamour & protection from scratches, & water marks. On it, I have a pink moire & gold pedestal glasses stand, clear glass carafe, phone, glass bud vase wi miniature pink & white carnations(very pretty)which last 2 weeks.
Because the Drew has about 6 shelves for zine's, books, & a million catalogs, I am able to use a lower shelf for medicine, remote, kleenex so that none of it shows.
Well, mine is closer to the Fantasy Bedside Table right now because I just gave it a clearing-out as part of a Deep Treatment. So it currently has an alarm clock, my moisturiser (because that's where I put it on, sitting on my bed), and a wooden carving of two people kissing. On the little shelves below are a small box for sex accessories, and another box with my perfumes (again, that's where I put them on).
Previously, it also had jewellery, a dozen books, ticket stubs, a stuffed giraffe (not sure why), a tin for my spare change (now moved to a sensible home), my chequebook, and other bits of crud crammed in.
I'm squarely in the middle, usually it only has on it the lamp and my glasses and a few odds and ends. My fiance on the hand has what looks like a de-militarized zone going on on his side. He has the clock, empty water bottles, books, magazines, glasses, loose change holder, etc. The only good thing about his messy side is that no one can actually see it if they don't go over to his side of the bed.
Mine is fantasy b/c it's so small. It is really a plant stand. It has a lamp, blistex and ear plugs (sometimes the neighbors annoy me). C'est tout. All I need for sleeping...
