Do You Telecommute?

5-3-telecommute.jpgWe'd actually been wondering whether the collapse of the Maze would result in a spike in the number of Bay Area residents telecommuting. Then we saw this article on just that very topic.

We've telecommuted for several years, and the thought of working in an office again practically gives us hives. We wonder, though, how many of you already telecommute, or if Sunday's accident has made you consider it. So tell us:

I've been working from home full-time for about two years now, and -- even before the maze collapse -- vowed that I'll never go back to cubicle hell if I can avoid it.

I enjoy being in an office, although luckily I'm not in a cubicle and we have a VERY casual dress code. I would have trouble staying focused at home (ie I'd end up working more on my own projects).

There are so many different people to talk to throughout the day. And, I get a lot of ideas from seeing how other people approach tasks/projects.

I work for a company that encourages us to work where we feel we would be most productive. So 3 to 5 days a week I work from home. I try to go in once a week. Feels good to dress up like a grownup and to interact w/ others. I also travel to offsites every now and again. My company is cuurently rolling out drop in centers so that when you need to 'come into the office' you can drop in at various locations and everything you need will be there and you can also meet up w/ team mates there, or schedule meetings.

It has been life changing and I do not think I will ever be able to go back to a convential office job. We also have two littles ones - so even though they are in 'school', not having to waste 2 to 3 hours commuting has drastically increased our quality of life.

I really do think this is the wave of the future (when the job allows for it). Company saves money by not maintaining office space, employee saves time and money not commuting, less cars on the road, etc. It's all good!
