Organizing Decor Ideas: An AT:SF Poll

Yesterday AT:NY wrote about how to organize your decor ideas. We feel like luddites for not knowing about Google Notebook and pdf995, or ever trying Stylehive and del.icio.us.

For years we've just used plastic sleeves and binders to keep track of our decorating desires (and someday we'll do something more than keeping a bazillion bookmarks on our Mac). And we're not the only ones who tear out and file. Victoria creates Inspiration Books (top photo), Holly at decor8 blogged her Look Books (bottom photo), and in this Open Thread, JonathanB suggested plain old file folders.

We're curious: What do you do?

I insert pages or cutouts into clear sleeves and keep them in binders. I also do this for my recipe collection. The clear sleeves keep the cutouts clean. And I can easily remove, move around, or update.

I'm so happy right now, I thought I was the only freak who did this.

I use a combo of google notebook and backpack. Here's a sample (taken mostly from AT)

I was just bookmarking sites in my own browser, but now that I've tried Google Notebook, I'm totally in love with it (haven't tried the others). Finally, I can see online images side by side (and discover that I hate everything).

Something Enrique said a couple months ago really resonated with me -- by the time things hit magazines, they're not fresh, and like him, I don't fit a demographic that gets its own magazine. (Is it a coincidence that we're both part of the Baby Bust generation?)

I have millions (trillions? googol?) of books and mags. cf. earlier post about t-shirts and magazines. I also have gazhillion bookmarks. I also have a professional organizer. Any guesses as to why?

I have binders like ttinsd, but I also rip pages out of magazines and put them in journals like Victoria. Plus, I have a million bookmarks like ebrown. And for some crazy reason, I'm having some trouble keeping up with everything! (huh!) I can't decide if Stylehive and related sites will save me, or get me in even more trouble.

Regardless, it seems like it's time to buy a scanner...

for digital stuff, i just drag and drop images into a "style tray" folder on my desktop. there are subfolders for different rooms, kinds of projects, etc.

for analog stuff, i'm a fan of the good old fashioned studio trick of bulletin boards. i have a metal strip on one of my bedroom walls that has all my paint chips, postcards, cutouts, etc. stuck on with magnets. this is especially good for testing out color combinations and such in the room where they'll eventually live.

I am sooooo enjoying hearing people admit to hoarding shelter magazines... I usually labor under major AT Guilt at being unwilling to prune my lifestyle to one perfect sleeper sofa, one perfect rug, two perfect floor lamps, a laptop computer, and a single pair of black Ferragamos that go with my two perfect black dresses that (in the French manner) I handwash and wear in rotation with exactly three incredibly splendid scarves. (But then, there are people on the NY site who'd argue about whether I really needed that third scarf.)

Oh my God, you are all so with the program, it's depressing me. I am still storing ripped out pages in folders. But I SWEAR, I am going to change...

a book with blank pages (i use the ones from the art supply store, spiral bound) and a glue stick - viola! you can create your own books.
some people go a step further and write in them - thoughts, feelings, etc. art therapy if you will. I don't get into that in these books - just eye candy. it's a good idea to organize books by category or something - keeps everything easy for future reference. most of all, it's just plain fun to do it. I got rid of 100 magazines over the summer and turned them into 2 slim books - imagine - 100 magazines are now being recycled vs. cluttering my home, and i have two books with my 'best ofs' in them.

of course, some magazines i do not throw away or rip apart. i have those in magazine files on a shelf.

for the most part, i'm only finding about 2 articles per magazine and a dozen or so photos so it makes more sense for me to toss the issue and save the important contents.

beyond flying the freak flag, i've selected the fabric, sewn it, and now i'm waving it,

freaks unite. i have been ripping from magazines for years and recall a day my brother dropped by room to ask 'what the hell I was doing?' When I explained I was ripping the greater good from the stack of magazines beside me, he glared at me and said "get a life." This is why he is a CPA partner at a large firm (bless his little heart) and I am an art buyer and who I am. Genes - go figure.

I am curious about this google notebook thingy, but I think I still will always love the tactile feeling of my journals. old school, schanizzle school.

p.s. Flickr is a pretty great way to bookmark favorite ideas, inspiration, photos etc.

Thank god. I knew I couldn't be alone in this.

I love the idea of scanning my pictures, but something about the tactile feeling of flipping through the pages of my binder I like.

I suppose it's the same reason I won't let go of my cd's or lp's.

I keep piles of magazines. For internet finds, I either bookmark or email the link to myself. This equals an inbox full of messages from myself. @_@ I may start creating a book since I'm running out of shelving space!

hehe, I'm so relieved to hear how others horde their design goods. It takes me about a year before I can bring myself to tear something out of a magazine. Even if I only like part of a magazine, I like to keep it intact for a while for lazily flipping through it on the sofa or in the bathtub. Sometimes it takes me until the third time through a magazine before I notice something I love.
When I can finally bring myself to amputate pages from a magazine, I put the pages in a photo-book separated into sections by type of space - bedroom, bath, dining, lounge, etc.
I need to test out Google notebook!

I used to save pages from magazines, but it always seemed messy and unorganized to me. Now, I just save the entire magazine. I bought a dark green metal file cabinet at an estate auction. It has three drawers across and 9 drawers high, for a total of 27 drawers, and each drawer is just deep and wide enough to hold a year's subscription of most magazines. When I run out of drawers...the oldest year's stack is supposed to go. (I'm still working on that part of the system. I am a magazinaholic.)

The guy bidding against me wanted it for his garage. He thought I was kidding when I told him it was going in my living room!

I do think if you are saving ideas for a specific room or upcoming project, tear sheets are probably the way to go.

What ever happened to-

"I keep mine in well organized magazines, shelved in lucite magazine organizers?"

posted by Chris NYC on 2006-09-14 14:35:05

I keep the whole magazine. I just can't bear to tear out pages. New magazines reside in large bedside baskets/shelves. When those fill, we have a bookshelf in the garage full of magazine holders where they are kept organized.

For online finds I use bookmarks and del.icio.us - I haven't organized these as well. One day...

i keep an inspiration board, which is more or less a wall, a filefolder, and loads of paint documents for the online photos. usually keep the magazines as well.

I cut pages out of magazines, punch holes and put them in a ring binder. I can insert pages and notes. Nice and simple.

Oh! and I don't use the term "Old School" anymore because I am so old I used that term as a boy.

After having my laptop stolen and losing all my bookmarks, I started using del.icio.us. It is awesome because it is so simple and easy to use and reference. Though I have to admit I also have piles of magazines that "someday" I plan to tear pages out of and organize.

I have interior magazines going back 25 years. Every few months I start a clear out but end up keeping them.
