Alvar Aalto's Tea Trolley

2007_04_23_aalto.jpgTea trolleys are not usually high on the list of must-haves for small spaces, but their versatility can be the missing link in a space that lacks a dining room. And when the tea trolley in question is as beautiful and timeless as Alvar Aalto's 1937 design, there's a bonus: style in spades.

How to use? Think room service: load up the trolley in the kitchen, roll it out into the space you're eating in, and use as a buffet server or sofa table. Then pile the dirty dishes back on, roll it out of sight, and call the butler to load the dishwasher.

(Just kidding, but don't you wish?)

If that's not your style the Aalto Tea Trolley makes a sassy bar cart.

This beauty is available in reproduction through a partnership between Herman Miller in the U.S. and Artek in Finland. It can be sniffed out in the Bay Area at bauhaus2yourhouse for $1,745, shipping included.

(Bauhaus 2 Your House is written up here.)

I've got a nice danish-modern cart that I've used as a side table for years. It's perfect really. They're becoming harder and harder to find. Get'em old and enjoy.
