LED Coffee Table

4-29-08 LED table.jpgWe're kind of like barracudas in that we're drawn to anything that sparkles. It's no wonder, then, why we're so interested in this table - under the glass top are 480 twinkling LEDs that respond to movement. Reach for your glass of wine, and the table comes to life with a trail of light following your hand. Bonus in that it runs off of only 35 watts of electricity when active.

Sure, you might say, LEDs are a great choice for conserving energy, but a regular coffee table uses no energy at all, so... what's really the benefit? Well, um, besides being cool, it's made out of 100% sustainable maple plywood and a water-based finish, so there's that, too. Available with a clear top as shown or with a frosted one, so you'll only see a soft glow.

I've seen this before but no on such a handsome table. I wonder if it'd work as well w/frosted glass?

Okay, it's made out of a reasonable material. But that still doesn't make a coffee table that uses electricity in any way a good idea. The trendy interest in sustainability on this site is really annoying. Buy lots of stuff - it's green! Look, it's made from something recycled! Throw out your old one and get a new one! Grr.....

i almost think it would look better frosted.. so you dont see all the electronics.

there are PLENTY of things all over the place that use electricity when it isnt needed. electric razor? toothbrushes.. blow dryers.. laundry machines, paper shredders.. CHRISTMAS TREES?
we could ALL be using candles.. but we dont.
i dont think its a "moral dillema" just because there are lights on it.

that said- i dont really think the style of the table fits the light-up idea. maybe on a more "minimal" table.. but i think this one would look better if it was a plain old coffee table.

People don't just throw out their coffee tables every time they see a new one they like. I think this table is cool, the top of it anyway. It is a little too much like a toy and would get boring, but someone was going to make this table sooner or later. If the top was just glass or wood, I'm not in love with the shape, really just the concept.
