SF Good Questions: Quality of the Gus Modern Chunk Dining Table?

5-29-chunk.jpgDear AT:SF, I'm graduating from college and moving across the state to a new city. I don't have much furniture, but I've had my eye on the Gus* Modern Chunk dining table for a while. I was wondering if anyone out there can attest to the quality of this table...

...I've had IKEA particleboard furniture all through college and I am now looking for furniture that will last me more than a few years. I know some pieces from stores like Crate and Barrel or Pottery Barn may cost more, but are still made of the same MDF or particleboard. I'm hoping to avoid this. So, how is this table? Also, are there any similar tables out there that may be made of real wood? Or should I simply be trying to get over my fear of particleboard furniture? Thanks,

-Christa

Christa,
We'd always choose wood over particleboard or MDF.

There are some comments here about Gus Modern, but we don't know about the quality of the Chunk. It does remind us of Crate and Barrel's Big Sur Dining Table, which is also made of solid oak.

Anyone?

I have the Big Sur. http://www.flickr.com/photos/art_chel/2469391137/

If this table is of similar quality (which I assume it is) it will last forever. It is extremely heavy. With the Big Sur you have to make sure to tighten the bolts every now and then.

If space were not an issue for me, I would have bought the double teak table from DWR.

Room and Board has a similar solid wood bench style dining table for a comparable price to the Gus* table.

What am I missing here? The table on the Gus website says it's made of quarter-sawn European oak.

I'd be interested in opinions too- Gus or Crate & Barrel? Which is better?

Both tables are said to be made from solid oak. My quick math suggests that the price difference between the two (small table plus 2 benches) is about $1200 plus tax. If the money is not a big deal, go with the one you love.

You also might want to take a look at Atlantico's solid white oak table (003 or 004) and benches in white oil finish. I have seen these in person and the color of the wood is really spectacular. A very soft pale grey with a very faint white liming effect in the grain. I haven't seen the Gus table in person to be able to compare, but the Big Sur CB table has a golden yellow hue which I personally don't care for as much.

One thing that should be mentioned about the Atlantico table is that it is unfinished wood. They have been oiled but I doubt that will protect them from staining if someone were to spill something (wine, grape juice, tomato sauce etc.) It doesn't seem like the most practical way to go for a dining table.

I just ran across this table which looks like the same one in the illustration above - I have no further information. Haven't seen it in person. But the store is located in SF so it might be worth a look:
