The holidays are always a fun time for white dishes. While white place settings go plain jane through most of the year, they get all dressed up for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the New Year. That's when white tableware really pays off: it's like a blank canvas. Our favorite white dishes of all? Arabia Finland's Arctica collection...
The classic white design, while distinct in shape, fits in well with everything. It's practical in use, too: It is oven, freezer, microwave and dishwasher safe. Designed in 1979 by Inkeri Leivo, the Arctica collection was initially regarded as radical for its pure whiteness. Today, it remains in production as one of Arabia Finland's most popular designs.
According to Arabia, the design has been crafted with the utmost care, and the trace of a woman's hand is perceptible in every detail. Its gentle, curvilinear lines and soft white, almost creamy, color crosses generations and is a timeless dinnerware to hand down—from oven to table, from mother to daughter, with equal ease.

I have a set of Arabia Ruska and a set of Dansk Mesa in blue. Although I have "china" I use the Ruska and mesa all the time, together and separately. Arabia is a really great company.

I bought my Ruska set in 1978 and have added to it over the years. It always looks lovely on my table especially in wall and winter with hearty food on my plates.
Then I bought the Arctica set about 10 years ago and I use it for more formal dining and in summer and spring. All my salads look great on Arctica dishes while hearty winter food with root vegetables look great on my Ruska set.
Another advantage of Arctica is that I can use a tablecloth or place mats of any color or pattern I choose.
