Look! Coaster Made from Buttons

We are seriously impressed by this coaster idea, which looks like a ton of fun to make as well as use (we love the clicking sound of buttons against a tabletop). Contrasting thread and a pile of uniform buttons complete the project.

Craftstylish has the complete tutorial here, but it's pretty self-explanatory when you look at it. We'd love to see a version with buttons of varying size and color, though that might be harder to thread into a grid.

That appeals to the OCD part of me.

Totally useless as a coaster . . . moisture would seep right through.

I think buttons would scratch the coffee table.

Danielle, this is cute, but where I live it gets very hot. There's no point in a coaster that won't protect what's under neath it.

You could sew it to a piece of felt- that would soa up moisture. And there is more potential - placemats, wall art, blinds. Sure, it's labour intensive but it's something to do whilst watching the idiot box. I used to be disappointed when looking at buttons in op-shops (thrift stores) - the only buttons I could find where those ugle off-white pearly type ones used in these coasters - now I look at them totally differently! :D

I don't want to be mean, but... this would go into my "projects that take way too long and are rather useless or don't accomplish their intended purpose" file. If I had such a file. It's a cute craft project, but as other commenters mentioned, I don't see how it would protect what's under it.

Could it be used as a trivet? maybe with bigger buttons? or are they not heat resistant enough?

Lovely, I have a thing for these off-white pearly type of buttons. I might try this technique, not on coasters, though. A Lampshade, maybe?

If you were really patient and creative, this idea might work for wall art...a sort of mosaic effect, especially if you use different-sized buttons.
