Taking Small Space Cues from the Smart Car

0409_smartcar01.jpg

We recently checked out a Smart Car interior for the first time and were surprised at how spacious it felt. While the cab of a car is a far cry from our home interiors, we can still remember a few lessons from the Smart Car when it comes to our small homes...

  • Light. The car we sat in was equipped with the "panorama roof", which allows light to penetrate the entire roof of the car. Lots of light can definitely help a small room feel more spacious. See some examples at Small Space Solution: Skylights
  • A place for everything and everything in its place. The Smart Car has a well-organized dash, highly visible controls, and storage features you find in larger cars. Compact storage designed with efficiency in mind can work wonders in a small home, too.
  • Quality. The Smart Car is engineered by Mercedes-Benz and its handling just feels solid. Our homes can also be built with quality and solidity in mind. Small homes can be a great opportunity to really pay attention to the details and maybe spend a little more per square foot, resulting in higher quality.

I agree - 'Cause we all know what happens when you underspend on a car: You end up with a Chevy Cavalier.

I wish they made them with light colored interiors. That's why I'm not running out to buy a Honda Fit, the interiors are all black. I hate that.

Hey, my mom drove a Cavalier for years...starting right after her Volkswagen Dasher bit the dust.

The points the author makes in this post are very true, though, and describe my tiny house perfectly. I'd take small and well-constructed any day over big and shoddy!

^ I own a fit and the dark interior doesn't bother me. There is a lot of light in the car. But I see where you might be turned off by that.

Actually - if you check out the Hermes Smart Cars - those interiors aren't black. And they're so droolyworthy.

We drove a Smart car throughout Tuscany last fall and I was really impressed with it. We had the "forfour" model and it was surprisingly comfortable - even for the passengers in the back seats.

It goes without saying that the gas mileage was fantastic.

Thanks, EmmieB. I checked the site, and it does look good. I had planned to test drive one at the Sacramento dealership but haven't had time to get up there. Of course, I don't need a new car right now. Maybe next year. There is one at school now. You can check out my photo of it:

I own one....LOVE it and my passengers are very surprised when they get in it and drive with me how 'roomy' it feels and I do say it is because of the roof.

I love these little cars but is this an ad or an opinion? It reads like an ad.

I drive a Smart Forfour (in Europe) and everyone is amazed by how much space there is inside.

>>hrhprincessfiona>> No more of an ad than many of the other postings on this site. The Smart Car is a product, it's small, and it's something people are talking about. Seems to fit with this site.

No thanks. Too many big rigs, trucks and cars with blind spots on the road to make me want to hop in one of these.

Ha ha on the Chevy Cavalier- rented a brand new one (read 200 miles on the odometer- I'd never even ridden in a car that new) for a week-long road trip. By the time we were home, the trunk was no longer latching, the interior lights no longer turned on, and the glove compartment kept opening and banging the front passenger. And these were not because of mishandling on our part.

Would love to try a Smart car. I understand that they're quite noisy when driving- has anyone found that to be true?

Had a first-model-year Cavalier. It was the DEFINITION of "lemon". Five years later I honestly couldn't GIVE it away -- Finally sold it for $50 to a college auto mechanics instructor, and it crapped out on him in about another year! (And if HE couldn't make it go, nobody could.)

Plan to get a Smart as soon as my current financial "crisis" is under control. I test drove one, and I loved it. (I just wish it ran on regular gas instead of premium -- or, better yet, was a hybrid. I think the European hybrid electric models are out, so might wait for them to arrive stateside.) Sitting in one feels a lot like being in a VW bug or something -- you don't even sense that the car is small. So I don't think it would feel much different on the road than my Integra does now. And the car was tested in crashes with Mercedes Bentz, where the Bentz crumpled fenders but the Smart just bounced off! (I will miss the trunk space, but that's a good way to keep from indulging my flea market madness...)
