The Next Animal for Your Home: The Octopus

Over the last few years, decor has been inundated with a vast menagerie of animal themed items for the home. We've featured owls, hippos, rabbits, pigs and giraffes, but now it seems the newest trend is moving under the sea.

Will's flawless nightstand makeover reminded us how intriguing octopi can be (and how long it's been since we read Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea). Unlike some of its four-legged land dwelling friends, this cephalopod seems to be capable of bringing either an air of graphic sophistication or animated whimsy to your home.

(And just in case you were curious, per wikipedia there are actually three correct ways to form the plural of octopus: octopuses, octopi and octopodes.)

More than anything, that nightstand makeover makes me love this trend. I wasn't really down with the owls or such, but I like this one.

I think some of the octopus trend, especially those like #1, is coming from the Steampunk aesthetic.

Oh please don't co-op the Octopus, I don't need my favorite animal the newest trend. It was bad enough to see this happen to the owls.

Love the Stephens print! And that the diver is smoking a pipe. I really like this trend. It can work with any design aesthetic with the endless color combos.

FYI 'octopi' is an incorrect term. 'Octopi' derives from the mistaken notion that octopus is Latin.

We just put up a wall of octopods and boat paintings. I love it. The fact that it is super trendy was totally an accident. We just happened to have a bunch of octopus and boat paintings laying around. . . .
