Before & After: Our Stained Glass Window

the pre-window phase, jump below for after

See that wall? This is where we installed that stained glass panel (see our bedroom before & after post). Some of you guys had some questions about how we came upon the decision to install the window in the middle our home. Jump below for the story...

In the midst of renovating, we ripped off some wood panels in the bedroom only to discover that the funky living room built-in was hiding the original back-wall of the house and an old window frame.

7-23-08 window5.jpg

We loved the idea that someone had simply added on to the house, maintaining the original structure and leaving the history intact. We felt we had to do the same and sat down to figure out a creative way that would also represent our own design whims.

Then one day, during a scavenging visit to Urban Ore, we fell in love with the stacks and stacks of vintage windows. We knew we didn't want a clear-paned window looking in on our bedroom, but we started obsessing over the idea of a stained glass window. And that's when eBay came a-callin'...

The panel was much cheaper than some of the gorgeous antiques we had spotted on antiquing trips. It's not vintage, but it suits our tastes (and budget) perfectly.

The panel was proportionately the same but slightly smaller than the original window frame so we added some new framing, sheetrocked the walls closed, painted and then put our little darlin' in place. We decided to finish the window with molding to match the rest of the windows in the house. As you can see, paint touch-ups are still needed but we couldn't be happier with the window.

It looks excellent. I love the nod to the original exterior, here. In addition to maintaining some nice light, and also privacy!

Lovely idea! Great geometric light-filled pattern! Just a suggestion: try scooting the dresser several inches away from that corner (moving to the right) and line up the center-line of the dresser with the center of the window- stronger visual statement!

Glass is indeed amazing---and the colors in the design are plenty of fun.

Nice work. Great dresser, window and floors.

We are searching paint colors for our living room, can you tell me the green color you used in the bedroom?

Thanks, Eileen

I'm not always a fan of stained glass, but that geometric pattern is truly gorgeous. Inspired choice. When we removed the old wall heater, we made a little built-in with shallow shelves--it matches the inset 3-ft-long door chime.

I'm with jen_g about not always being a fan of the stuff, but that's one of the most modern, tasteful, beautiful AND wonderfully colorful stained glass pieces I've ever seen.
