Stainless Steel Tile Backsplash from Modwalls

4-16-08mwSS.jpgApartment Therapy is no stranger to Modwalls, so it should come as no surprise that when we were trying to get inspired for our own upcoming kitchen remodel, we went straight to their online portfolio. As expected, we fell in love with almost all of their glass tile (which is what they're known for), but what really took the cake was their stainless steel tile.

These photos are from a house in Napa Valley. The tiles are brushed stainless steel, 50mm x 50mm, and available here.

I've seen this tile in several showrooms all over the SF area - it *does* look very sharp. The problem? The tile appears to scratch VERY easily. Even in the relatively forgiving environment of a tile showroom, close examination of the tile revealed dozens of scratches all over it. I can't imagine what regular scrubbing (as for a cooktop backsplash) would produce....

An anal retentive, clean freak's nightmare.

black_sheep - are you calling me an anal retentive clean freak?

If so, you'd be right. The choice between having a clean backsplash and knowing the cleaning would scratch up my beautiful tile would just about make my head explode!

I can lean toward anal-retentive clean freak and that backsplash would make me CRAZY. I'm sorry I have stainless appliances.

Not particularly liking it but then again I think the stainless steel everything is a bit much.

I worked in "food service" when I was in high school and everything in the kitchen was stainless steel. Of course it scratched and looked used, but I liked that. People want a patina on copper or rust on steel, so what's wrong with stainless showing some age too?

am I the only one who thinks this looks like bad wrapping paper?

I love stainless steel, always have, and getting scratches on it from everyday use has never really been an issue. And YES, eebnyc, the checkered pattern is dead to me. I've seen some nice stainless steel tiles in a subway tile pattern, just really small. Those were nice.

:gasp:
I just finished a diy version of this with aluminum tape.
$5 a roll baby (and mumble mumble hours...)

funny how ideas seem to collect themselves out of the ether in clusters like this.

so I have a backsplash in my bathroom that is dreadful. Awful tile that (thank god) neither coordinates in color or dimension with the sink. I think the landlord replaced the sink but didn't get around to replacing the tile. At any rate, *if* I were to remove the tile and replace it with new tile, how would I go about this? Its a small space so it seems like a possible DIY? Any ideas/suggestions are appreciated!

p.s. love the stainless steel tile but I agree, if it were mixed with some other patina/color it would be even cooler.
