Top 10: Shelter Magazines

11-14-top10.jpgThere was a Good Question on AT:NY last week (A Satisfying Shelter Magazine?) that made us realize that in the world of shelter magazines, there are very few that we would consider satisfying. We actually only buy a few every single month. Others are hit and miss.

So here, in no particular order, are our favorite shelter magazines. Which would you add to the list? Which do you love? Which do you subscribe to or track down every month?

Livingetc (UK)
• Elle Decoration (UK)

Metropolitan Home
• Inside Out (Australian)

I used to subscribe to more home mags but with so many great websites accessible today, it can be hard to justify the vast amount of trees that went into the quarterly pile I'd toss into the recycle bin.

Still, it is surprisingly gratifying to flip through shiny colored pages now and then.

The Elle Decoration UK version is definitely the most consistently satisfying shelter mag I've found - such great layout and marvelous photo spreads! Why is it that the US version (or even the French or Italian versions, for that matter) seems so weak in comparison?

Metrop Home is usually fun to read, too, but it can be hit or miss at times.

I subscribe to our local DWELL magazine and Metropolitan Home. The rest, I just browse at the bookstore. All the European and Australian mags cost a fortune.

Agree with UK Elle Decoraction as the one I find most consistently inspiring and creatively energizing. Second place for me goes to World of Interiors, although it's expensive so I only buy it once/twice a year.

I also like British Homes & Gardens and British House & Garden and Canadian House & Home.

I love Domino and Martha's new one, Blueprint--but they are probably only semi-shelter; they are, I think, equal parts shelter/decor and lifestyle. And cute clothes. It's a dangerous combination.

I would add -

Country Home - actually quite modern with a rustic twist

Sunset - their home features and idea houses are great

I read them all, through my library, picking up about a dozen issues a month to peruse (US and overseas). My favorites right now are House & Garden (a good primer for how to pull together a traditional, eclectic or modern look), Canadian House & Home (sadly the library doesn't carry it), and Natural Home.

I have to agree with pdx brooke and say "Canadian House and Home", as well as Canada's "Style at Home". My most reliable picks!

(I also like Elle Decor.. but do you find that you are only looking at the last 10 pages or so as all the good pics are at the back. That bugs me. Hence, that has been demoted to quick checkstand browsing material...)
