You say "dish towels."
Some folks say "tea towels."
Frenchfolk (who make the nicest ones) say "torchons."
We say that if you live in a rented apartment and don't love your kitchen, colorful dish/tea towels are a superb way to over-ride the ugly.
Here are some of our faves; please add your own!
• Atelier Lzc Bird Dishcloth in purple or green, $16
• Hudson Dishtowels, $3.95
• Wrapables Dishtowel Sets, $8.99
• Woven Jacquard Teatowels, $18

In a home magazine in New Zealand, they once featured a funked-up bungalow where the owner had framed a radical set of tea towels and hung them up like poster art in her kitchen and dining room. They looked great. A lot of these would, too!
I bought one I loved a few months ago at Anthropologie with an applique yellow bird and fun, colorful polkadots.
one of my fave searches on ebay is "vintage dishtowels" -- lots of fun stuff out there.
Oh! I have one of the Woven Jaquard towels from QuelObjet. Bought it years and years ago in a funky little shop in Georgetown. It's beautiful. I've thought of hanging it on a dowel rod. Anyway... Yes! these French towels are great.
I just bought an apt and after the closing I hardly had money in savings. But my father used to say "a woman without a scarf, a man without a tie, and a wall without an art" is not totally complete. Si with my limited budget, I was looking for inspiration. Soon enough a trip to anthroologie, to see my fav sofa by Marimekko fabric (even thought in my wildest dreams it is in my new living room) I saw a dishtowel by marimekko and immediatelty thought how great it would be. And sure enough since 2 months it is on the wall, and nobody belives the story when I tell them, they touch it, they feel it and still do not believe it cause it soooooo beautiful!

New York Muhtari - Was it a white background with a deep burgundy and ochre leaves? I bought that one and turned it into a cover for a tiny plant stand I found on the street.
Check out this site, too: http://www.tikoli.com
Sassy in SF, if you go to marimekko website, the design called Kaiku.
If you want to see it, I can send the photos that I took, in a seperate email.
Xochi. Click my name.
Sorry, here's the link that will actually take you to the tea towels on the Xochi site.
Now if only I could get my boyfriend to not use them for wiping up marinara sauce.
NY Muhtari - That's a gorgeous fabric with the birch tree. Different than the one that I purchased.
