One of the best ways to reinvent your rental is to unify the look and feel of the pre-installed lighting fixtures.
We did a sweep of the web looking for attractive wall-mounted light fixtures in a range of styles, some ambient and some task, and here's what we came up with. This list is just for starters...please add to it!
• Lumi Accordian Wall Lamp, $69
• Resin Cube Light, $72
• metal tripod sconces, $79
• Technic 3-head Spot Light, $142
• Fabby Squares Wall Sconce, $165
• Bow 24 Wall Lamp, $195
• Artemide Dazzle, $244
• Orbit Sconce, $248

School House Electric (www.schoolhouseelectric.com) has some wonderful wall mounted fixtures, many of which are very reasonably priced. I'm a fan.
it's like you read my mind! i am looking at replacing the wall sconces in my new (old) place and i have a problem. there is no light switch in my room and the sconces are turned on with a pull chain. i have been having difficulty finding any nice looking sconces with pull chains. any ideas? (short of wiring my room for a switch, i think that's a little beyond my ability at the moment!)

I have the same problem in my living room. I picked the echo sconce available at rejuvenation.com, a great resource along with school house electric. They have some others besides this one.
You should also ask them (and schoolhouse) if there is something you like they may be able to add the switch to the sconce. They both make their own lighting, and have the capability to do this on some designs. You just have to ask.
I thought Oprah's home issue had a fantastic idea about wall lighting, which is to use an "oversize swing arm lamp" over a bed, rather than two sconces on the sides of the bed-- see here:

(the whole article on lighting is great, btw)
Lisa, other commenters: any thoughts on where I could find swing arm lights like this one? I love how it keeps the elegance of a sconce-look but doesn't get into "prissy" territory... :)
best,

Phoebe if you find one please let us know!
Me, I just want to drape my wall sconces with glass fiber cloth, like on the Delight lamp (http://www.mossonline.com/product-exec/product_id/31267/r/Froogle). Does anyone know where I can get that kind of industrial -material-type cloth?
I'm also looking for a sconce with a switch on the light... found this one with a pull chain at Pottery Barn: http://www.potterybarn.com/products/p5599/index.cfm?pkey=clgtwalwir
Not sure if it's what I really want but I'm not finding much out there.
Schoolhouse Electric can add a switch to most fixtures, unfortunately not the Metropolitan http://www.schoolhouseelectric.com/fixtures-detail.asp?
It is made from cast solid aluminum.
But most all of their other fixtures are switchable.
