Artful Beach Towels from Works on Whatever

Whether you're hitting the actual beach this summer or just lying out on your postage-stamp lawn, a cool beach towel to sprawl on is a worthwhile luxury. With these towels designed by contemporary artists for Works on Whatever, an ongoing project by the Art Production Fund, you can look hot, support a good cause, and enjoy a stunning artwork all at once...

Since 2007, the WOW project has been recruiting big-name artists—Julian Schnabel, Jeff Koons, and Elizabeth Peyton, just to name a few—to apply their works to everyday objects for the home. The profits go towards the Art Production Fund's non-profit mission, which involves expanding the audience for contemporary art and investing in major civic art projects.

Each of the beautiful designs seems to evoke a different feeling or statement associated with summer, travel, leisure, or the sea. Here are our favorites (images from left to right, above):

• Raymond Pettibon
• Julian Schnabel
• Karen Kilimnik
• Elizabeth Peyton
• Ed Ruscha

The towels cost $50 and are available directly from WOW.

Thank you for the post, Susie. I just purchased the Richard Pettibone towel for my dad for father's day. Great gifts and a great cause. I love twofers.
