Wasn't someone on one of AT: NY's Open Threads looking for one of these a few months ago?
Browsing The Magazine's website, we came upon the Red Cross cabinet by Cappellini. Designed by Thomas Ericksson in 1992, it's also available in blue or white. We like it because it's classic, and simple, and immediately recognizable for what it is.
The small (17"x17"x6"D) cabinet is made of enameled steel, and sells for $588 at The Magazine. Unica Home sells it for $603.

I found a much cheaper version of this at IKEA.

Basically, two U-shaped red glossy cabinets set sideways create a cross in the center--where the negative space is. Cost? $50!
Just my 2 cents.
Coincidentally, I just received my long-ago-ordered Capellini Cross cabinet (from Unicahome.com) about a week ago. I love it! I was hesitant to pay so much for such a small item that, as Andy has posted, has been imitated elsewhere. The truth is, though, that it is beautifully made, and worth the money. The steel is heavy gauge, and the lacquer/paint is thick and glossy. Nothing tinny about it! The door closes with a solid feel. It can be hung with the hinge to the right or left, since the two small shelves inside are the same top to bottom. If you can afford it, I recommend this item.
Still, cheers for Ikea for making good design affordable to all!
