Turkish-style Fringed Bath Towels

Ever since we saw the edges of a fringed bath towel peeking from a basket in a Domino's March spread The Green List, we've been intrigued by the luxurious linens.

A Turkish towel is technically one made from Turkish cotton, a long fiber cotton from the Aegean region. The longer fiber means more absorbency, but too absorbent and the towel takes too long to dry between uses. Turkish cotton is not the longest fiber available (that honor goes to Egyptian cotton), and that's why Turkish towels tend to feel a little less soft in the store, but soften a great deal with successive uses and washings.

Not all Turkish towels have fringe, but the ones that do give the best Eastern vibe to a bathroom. The towels pictured at top are the Hammam towels from Le Souk. The ones in the Domino spread are available at Macy's, but not online.

I bet these would be great for summer in the same way that flannel sheets are great for winter, percale for summer.

The Le Souk towels are around 8-16 Euros each (the company is out of the Netherlands, but they ship internationally). The Macy's towels are about the same, but in dollars. Fringed towels are actually a little hard to find, but these two are pretty nice.

These are available in Portland, OR, at Indigo Traders, $25 each, also at http://www.indigotraders.com/index.htm. They're beautiful, dry quickly. Some are very absorbent right away, some take several washings; you can ask. I used to belong to my own towel of the month club....
