Escapes: Hi House

8-7-hihouse1.jpgRecently, while we were looking for a romantic weekend getaway, our friends Sarah and Aaron suggested a vacation rental called the Hi House. Located at the foot of Point Reyes National Seashore in Inverness, the Hi House is an amazing glass home that is elevated amongst the surrounding trees. Sarah and Aaron have allowed us to share photos from their stay at the Hi House this past March.

8-7-hihouse2.jpgBecause the house is built up in the trees, the only way to get up to it is via funicular tram or spiral staircase. The tram moves at a leisurely pace, so you can enjoy the surrounding nature views on your way up. At night, the tram is lit up with over-sized bulbs.

8-7-hihouse3.jpg8-7-hihouse4.jpgThe building itself is very small and only meant for a couple (or maybe two close friends) to share the space. The three walls of floor-to-ceiling windows are the studio's high points, but be aware that this also means very bright mornings! If you're a light sleeper, bring a sleep mask with you. You should also bring a pair of binoculars to get a bird's eye view of the beautiful flowers and wildlife surrounding you, as well as great views of the ocean and Tomales Bay.

8-7-hihouse5.jpg8-7-hihouse6.jpgThe décor is a mix of mid-century modern and rustic cabin style. You'll find Eames-era furniture combined with nature-inspired details and decorations throughout the house, including an oak chest with a nest and antlers arranged next to a woven basket and out on the deck, an old log with a glass ball set neatly in one of the log's folds. Overall, the best way to describe the style is clean and simple.

Honest to God, I've been designing a raised cottage very similar to this! My buddy and I plan to build it near Wiarton at the foot of the rugged Bruce Peninsula, run solely on solar and wind power. One of our challenges was to get stuff up there without too many stairs, and this tram idea is great. My other option is a sort of cantilevered elevator on steel cables and pulleys, but the tram seems safer and more feasible.
Thanks for this find!!

Crazy! I love it. Nice how mod furniture mixes with the rustic bits to make something that's just woodsy enough. Lightspeed, I'd love to see yours too.
