Escapes: Mar Vista Cottages

Quiet. Simple. Calm.

A couple of years ago, while researching dog-friendly places to stay, we discovered Mar Vista Cottages in Anchor Bay. For a reason we can't recall, we ended up going someplace else, but the getaway cottages have been bookmarked on our computer ever since.

Mar Vista's classic seaside cottages are simple wood frame clapboard buildings. They're quiet, low-key, private. They have down pillows and comforters, shutters, old-fashioned kitchens, ocean views. There's also an organic garden for guests, and a private beach. There aren't TVs, microwaves, or telephones.

Fodor's says:
Built in the 1930s, each of the 12 cottages has been lovingly restored, but not to excess: you'll find only the things you need, and nothing you don't. Uncluttered and uncomplicated, it's a place to relax and unwind, where after reading in a hammock all day you can soak in an outdoor redwood tub and contemplate what to barbecue.

Mar Vista sounds like a wonderful escape. One of these days we really will visit. And maybe we'll bring home some of that simple serenity.
