Description: I love to travel the world as much as the next jet-setter but with current gas prices blowing up and airline travel prices sky-high, I'm sticking to local getaways this summer. I'm not a hard-core camper but try to find my way in to nature as often as possible when the temperature rises. Any place that promises a nice swim, a cool beer and campfire with a rockin' jambox is good in my book....
My group of friends usually kicks off camping season with a late April weekend trip to China Beach Camp up in Marin. It's a great spot but heeds to San Francisco weather guidelines and provides a chilling fog cover for most of the weekend. This year we were all itching for a hot weather getaway and headed east to Livermore. We had never been to Del Valle but decided to try something new....
Good thing we did 'cause we were basking in the warm sun (with a hat and spf 50 of course). Best part about the heat? The ice-cold lake at your feet! Del Valle was a quick 40 minutes from Oakland but feels worlds away. Friends brought a blow-up boat, so a couple of us grabbed a cooler with snacks and beers and headed out to the middle of the lake...
Back at the campgrounds, I took a little jaunt to the river behind our site and spotted a few Blue Herons. The campground is home to a huge variety of wildlife and boasts some nice bike and hiking trails and excellent fishing.
The campground is clean, large and thankfully roomy enough to avoid being swarmed by the few RVs we spotted. Also, and this is key, the sites are far enough apart that our *ahem* gregarious group of friends didn't seem to bother the neighbors with a late night impromptu jam-session...
