Description: So often when I go on vacation I, like many people, look for the fastest way to get to a destination. With the measly two week average of vacation time, it's important to make the most of every second. A while back, the boy and I decided to make the "getting there" the entire trip. We drove down from San Francisco, in our "new" '78 Mercedes SL, to Mexico. We camped, ate as many fish tacos as we could find and generally had an amazing time being as spontaneous as possible along the way...
This was before the gas crisis and though not the cheapest way to see the sights, the vintage Mercedes was a huge hit as we made our way through towns. We left the day after Christmas, stopped in Ensenada to get our visas (required when you travel further south) and had lunch at the fish market. Touristy, but damn if the fish tacos weren't to die for....
It was pouring down sheets of rain as we drove and the streets were flooded. We barely made it through some of the areas on the road but managed to make it to Santa Rosalita, a stop along the famous Baja 500 off-road race, where we ate fantastic lobster and crashed in the restaurant's small hotel.

Loving the vintage 450SLC - was that a Craigslist find?

Over the years I have attempted several road trips in vintage automobiles (a 1976 BMW, a 1976 Volvo 242 and a 1976 VW camper bus). Somehow, my bad carma (pun intentional) prevents me and the cars from getting much further than an hour or two from my house, let alone all the way down and up the baja. Maybe I need to stay away from 1976 models.
Your trip looks like it was fabulous, and I assume the car did not give you troubles. My partner and I hope to take a road trip down into Mexico one of these years. However, I think I'll take the reliable vintage 2007 Honda Civic.

Did you convert your mercedes to run on Vegetable oil? if you can, you should! it works great ( i have a converted bus)
