In honor of Escapes Month, we spent last week up in the woods of Sonoma County. Our lodgings? Tent cabins, which we think are a brilliant blend of permanent and temporary structures.
Tent Cabins
The tent cabins are simple wooden frames built on top of decks that are then topped with a canvas cover. While they don't offer much more warmth or protection than a regular tent does, they're certainly easier to move around in (the ceilings are a little over seven feet tall) and give you a wooden deck floor instead of just dirt.
We know these would be relatively inexpensive to build, and so always keep them in the back of our heads for that fantasy piece of land we'll someday own . . .

This is great! I was just up in the Emmigrant Wilderness a couple weeks ago. We are thinking of putting up a tent cabin w/deck before our plans for a permanent cabin are approved.

Just remember when you are in one of these keep your voices down at night among other noises, they give you a false sense that no one can hear you.

It looks similar to one that my husband and I used to stay in quite often when we were visiting my in-laws. They had a tiny cabin in the woods, with a "guest" tent cabin near-by. We stayed in it through the winter, as this one happened to have a little wood stove in it that kept the whole thing very toasty. =)

Maho Bay on the island of St. John in the Virgin Islands is an eco friendly resort which has these tents. A wonderful place for a family vacation. There are other types of accomodation as well.
