We see this as a space-saving substitute for a regular sink in a tiny bathroom, so long as it's not the primary bathroom (can you imagine washing your face or shaving over a basin so small?)
Also recommended for those who are lazy about washing hands after using the loo. As with making it to the gym on a regular basis, proximity (of the destination) is everything.

Saw these in Japan, though I admit I still felt the need to wash my hands in a proper sink afterwards. Yes, the water goes into the toilet AFTER you use it, but it still felt kinda icky.
They have these at the local hippie restaurant. It's actually pretty cool, *but* the water is sooooooo cold in the winter! Brrrr!

Sink-toilets like that are pretty common in Japan. I had one in my tiny apartment while living there. I used it to wash my hands but nothing else. To me it was a wasted convenience. If elsewhere, I'd just go to the kitchen and give my hands a good scrubbing and thorough rinse.haha. Click my name for a picture of it.
When I was growing up, my parents owned a hardware store. He sold these occasionally to people with postage stamp sized bathrooms--especially in older homes.
I'll never forget seeing in one of the catalogs he purchased from, a little *drinking fountain* attachment for one of these babies. I think it's the nastiest thing I've ever seen! I haven't seen it since, so the manufacturer probably came to their senses.
Wouldn't the soapy water hurt the internal toilet parts? Not to mention the soap scum that can accummulate inside the tank...
And if you have pets who likes to drink from the toilet from time to time, this is totally not an option.
The water from the sink goes to the bowl, not the tank. And, if you care about your pets, you wouldn't let them drink from the bowl because the bowl, dirty as it already is, is directly in contact with the sewer system.
