2006_06_02_RetroRedologo.jpgWe love the fact that these guys do nothing but reupholster mid-century furniture. With the slogan "We can do anything to your mid-century chair," RetroRedo.com is an eBay or craigslist buyer's dream resource.

2006_06_02_Saarinen-chair-C.jpgHere's how we'd work it: spot a great chair on eBay or craigslist. Buy it for a rock bottom price and ship it straight to RetroRedo.com for a makeover. Select a fabric from one of the terrific, contemporary and atomic-age upholstery lines they stock (these include Maharam and Angela Adams), and leave the rest to this Oklahoma-based specialty workshop. In 7 days you get your newly-upholstered chair via mail.

That's not of course how RetroRedo.com expects it to go -- they expect you to send it yourself -- but we like the idea of never laying eyes on the chair in its ugly phase. It would feel like receiving a brand-new, custom-made chair instead of something musty and dusty out of a stranger's basement.

RetroRedo's website provides complete instructions on how to handle the shipping on the cheap: you disassemble your chair and send them only the seat for re-upholstering (in many mid-century styles the seat and base were designed to come apart). If you do it this way shipping usually costs about $20, and the re-upholstering starts at about $225 (for high-grade vinyl).

There are so many iconic chairs from this period that are cost-prohibitive in their re-issued incarnations (case in point, the $2380 Womb Chair), but you don't have to scavenge too much to turn up a looker that just needs a little TLC.

Please no purple vinyl Eames lounge chairs though. That's a sacrilege.

Interestingly, isn't the Eames Lounger supposed to have five legs, not four as in the pic? I saw a nice beige four-legger on Miami Craigslist and was advised not to buy it because of that variation.

tlack-

on the retro redo website, that purple chair is listed as a "selig chair" (under the "others" tab) which i believe was a knockoff of the eames lounger?

looks like they do know their stuff :)

I shipped this company 2 Eames armshell chairs
that were ready for Goodwill, found the ad
in Moderism magazine, shipped them direct
picked out a Alexander Girard fabric from
Maharm, now these chairs are priceless.
They also found for me 2 effiel tower bases, installed them, put new nice foam rubber on both chairs and new crimp
cords. Now are in my Miami Beach office.
FANTASTIC LOOK!!!! and Lloyd the owner is
very helpful with everything, and knows his chairs.

Hi thanks to all the folks who have said nice
things about my company. We try very hard to make all customers Happy and try to give a good price for what you get .
We have done so many Eames Shell chairs that were ready for the Local Dump!!!
as most know these chairs were in every bus station, air port, Hospital, Library , Collage, and
Laudermat in America.
t
They are the most loved icons of the 50's 60's
and 70's every time. I redo these chairs it is with love knowing that they will get to live on for another 40 years , The chairs do need new foam, and a crimp cord since we can not use the original . When Charles Eames designed this chair in 1948 he knew he had something special and by each and every one of you redoing the old vinyl and fabric you are making that Icon live for ever . Thanks to all my great customers from all over the world. and to Apt therapy S.F.

Last month I sent two sarrine 71 chairs to Retro Redo in Tulsa Okla . The chairs came back in a really nice maharam fabric that the owner named Floyd picked out. I was really happy he used a red fabric and they look nice the chairs were in my Moms house since 1955 and I liked the way they looked.
My sister wanted to put them in a Estate sale but I thought they should be spared and I am sure glad that I did. I can't believe how easy it ws dealing with this company I found them on the internet , and saw them on the AT sight for redoing furniture,
