apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

What California Looks Like In Our Dreams

Built in 1872 the Palmtag Muzzio Bowen Mansion, which sits on LaSelva Beach, just outisde Santa Cruz, is surrounded by organic farms and panoramic ocean views. It's a short walk to the beach and best of all... up for sale. Check out the price tag (if you can keep from drooling) and the interior of this spectacular renovation after the jump!

This breathtaking home is up for sale at Sotheby's for $2,790,000. Although we can think of other ways to spend that amount of cash, right now living here isn't looking like the worst idea we've ever had.

Check out these pictures (plus many more), to see the full view of the home and all the detailed work that has happened. The home has been featured in This Old House and Architectural Digest alike for the amazing restoration work that has been done.

If all Apartment Therapy readers chipped in a dollar... and we did a time share....

Wow...what a view and setting for a house! I especially like the kitchen and like the natural cabinetry on the bottom and white cabinets on top.

Maybe a native New Yorker can corroborate, but I'm under the impression that the framed b&w photos in the 4th photo are of details on a building located at the corner of Great Jones & Lafayette. I seem to recall having taken a similar, if not same set of photos upon walking out of Acme Bar & Grill last fall...

Can you imagine if all the AT readers pitched in a dollar and did a time share? People would want to re-decorate daily!

Ha... I saw this house on redfin.com a couple of months ago and emailed the link to my mom. I told her she could live in the guesthouse if she bought the place for me.

I don't know what property values are like generally in that area, but this seems like an incredible bargain. To paraphrase Martha, you can't find a shack on the water with land like that anywhere on the east coast asking $2.8MM, much less with such a beautiful recent renovation.

I agree with amed studio -- that price seems absurdly low here in California! At that rate, you would think it would have been snapped up in a heartbeat, even with this economy.

Love it all! But I have a question - what are the hooks (that the pictures are hanging from) called? Museum hooks? I have a patio wall I want to put some art on, but can't drill into. It's driving me crazy.

I'd enjoy a dinner party in that dining room...

I agree, amed. It seems like an amazing deal--the house alone could cost that in some parts of CA, and then you've got the ridiculously gorgeous piece of oceanfront property it's sitting on. Yes, it's still a lot of money, but it really is unique.

I couldn't even afford the taxes. What a great place. Just takes my breath away!

Amazing!

I bet that the going maintenance of a wooden structure of that age next to the harsh ocean air would probably double the actual cost of ownership of the house over the next 20 years...

But if funds were unlimited, I can think of few more lovely homes to buy.
