For a long time we've made do with drapery rods improvised from bamboo branches and cup hooks. This was a great DIY solution when we came up with it five years ago because we were decorating with virtually no money.

But it wasn't just a budget-driven choice. We have large windows--and lots of them--and we needed really simple window treatments. Garden bamboo and cup hooks were more subtle and unobtrusive than 99% of the fussy, finial-heavy drapery hardware we saw in the stores at the time.
