The Home Office: Balancing Comfort, Function, and Style

For those of us who work from home, the question of how to integrate the office into the home can be a tough one. Of course the workspace needs to encourage productivity and discourage procrastination, but if it's in your home it also needs to express your family's personal style and maintain a warm, inviting vibe. This is a balance we've been struggling with in our own workspace, and lots of our curees this spring seem to be dealing with the home office too. So we went poking around for a little inspiration...

Here are a few factors you might want to consider when creating your own workspace at home:

Color. In a traditional workplace there isn't much choice as far as color goes. But at home, you can think about what kinds of colors will inspire you to get work done. Do bright shades energize you, or do they stress you out? Do you prefer a serene all-white environment, or will an excess of white give you headaches?

Artwork. Hanging art in an office is difficult; you want pieces that won't be distracting, but will still inspire your own creativity. Try hanging groups of matching frames for an organized, disciplined feel. Or go with a single strong statement piece to emphasize your confidence and boldness.

The office chair. No matter what, a desk chair obviously has to be comfortable, but that doesn't mean you've got to sacrifice style. These days there are many good quality knockoffs of Eames-era office chairs available... craigslist is also a great source for the real thing!

Accent furniture. We like to have an extra comfy chair in our office; with a laptop, it's sometimes nice (and easier on the butt) to move from one seat to another in the middle of a work session. But loading up an office with comfortable furniture encourages other distractions (like napping); and if you work at home, you know that there are already plenty of these to go around. If you know you're prone to distraction, keep the accent furniture to a minimum.

Feel free to weigh in! What are your tips for achieving the balance of function and style in your office at home?

i didn't take plastolux's comment as being mean - they DO look like starburst candies. which makes me both hungry and curious as to what they really are and where they came from. they're kinda cool.

got sidetracked - i have a very teeny tiny office and that photo just gave me a great idea on how to position the desk and still have room for my books.

wow I do not see that as a mean comment either! They do look like starburst, cute!

My comment would be most of these are good looking desk and storage in a room, not a home office in the since you run your business at home no way I could have a perfect space like these and do what I do.

I would work from home just so I could decorate it. So inspiring, especially the black room

These are some of the most lovely offices I have ever seen! I am truly inspired to do something with mine. I love the built-ins. My only concern would be tripping (repeatedly) over the lamp cord in the first office and the small flower rugs in the 4th. #5 is my favorite.

i don't think janel was insinuating that the first comment was mean -- i've noticed AT leaving those comments on pretty much every thread, as a heads-up.

I love these spaces, especially #1 and #4! However, the biggest problem in my office (i.e. desk in living room) is finding a pretty solution for my printer and scanner. I keep looking at these images, trying to spot the printer, looking for clever hidden electronic tricks, without much luck.

Hi Everyone -

My comment wasn't intended as a response to plastolux's comment at all!

We're simply posting links to the new policy in threads throughout the day to make sure everyone is aware of it.

Oh! Does anyone know where that yellow chair in the first pic is from? It's gorgeous! And it might work in my dining room (or is it too formal for a marble topped cast iron table?)

I just got inspired to do my daughters room like #7. Love the pink and gray. Does anyone know where to find the desk in #8?

Apt11 -

Yes, the ugly electronics issue is very annoying. This wouldn't work for the scanner, but have you thought about hiding your printer under a table, using a table skirt? For what it's worth: I've got a desk that's basically two ikea sawhorses with a glass top, and I've draped a piece of fabric over it (sari I bought in India) to hide the electronics and the wires. The printer sits on the sawhorse's little shelf, to keep it up off the floor. Anyway, hope that helps!

Yes, please AT, MORE articles and photos from real people working from home. My husband and I are going to be starting a major from scratch office design and need help and inspiration (from furniture to colors, accents, etc...) I'm a graphic designer and he's a video producer, so there's lot of stuff...not just one pretty little desk with no wiring around it.

Yes, please tell us where the beautiful art in #1 is from. Also, where are the flower rugs in #4 from?

auburny- west elm has a similar table desk-

This one is so cute in blue-

I have a printer/scanner it just sits on top of my table desk but my table is pushed up against a wall so the cords are not visible.
There are endless cabinets out there to house equipment, I saw a old wood buffet at the thrift store over the weekend, if I had the space I would of snapped it up. I would of painted in white and put some fun hardware on it. The wood was in bad shape but it could of been turned into a storage unit for printer, fax, machines, just drilling a few hole in the back for the cable.

Great desk areas (I love imagining what goes on in a room full of empty Hermes boxes and a zebra skin rug! Back when there was a stock market someone once sat there saying Buy! Sell! into the phone). But I agree with apt11 and LoriSF that these "workspaces" seem slightly more for show than actually for work (though I recognize Kim's office, #3, and I know she works there!). Question: is there any good way to store all one's computer peripherals, which generally look so awful in an office, and which are pleasantly absent in these photos? I work at home and have a scanner, computer tower as well as a laptop, second giant monitor, printer, a giant basket of modems and hubs, the Mac airport, power bars. IKEA doesn't sell anything remotely usable to house all these things - I've repeatedly checked - and I'm starting to think I'm going to have to build something myself. What would be useful is a single unit, preferably on wheels, with a million little spots for all that stuff as well as room on the top for the scanner and printer to go side by side, since those have flip-up lids and can't have anything above them. What are we supposed to do with all this stuff? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Last note: I think floor-to-ceiling wall-mounted bookshelves, with a little stepladder, are an underused storage solution. The area high up on a wall is generally wasted space and is great for things you don't need as often. And a wall of shelves looks great. If you're not in an earthquake zone.

I love that each room has a different feel to it. So colorful and vibrant! I am in love with #4 and the painting! Seems like a home you could never be unhappy in! So inspirational!

I think I might just have found the solution to my problem with the bookshelves in #5.

Any idea where to find the desk on the last picture? I like how it is very simple yet curvy.

These are all great ideas. In particular, I love the third photo...anyone know where to find the desk and turquoise shelves/vanity (or something similar)? Such great colors and patterns!

Lasnap, the chiffarobe is a one piece bi-level waterfall that has been painted. You can find them in antique and thrift stores - they're blonde and surprisingly light-weight.

The shellac tends to flake off, so anyone who took up the project would usually just wire brush the surface, give a dark base coat with a lighter top coat, and poly the whole thing when done.

The desk legs look stock - Ikea, West Elm. The top appears to be fabric under glass - but the glass is tiled? Don't know.

Great article. Quick question, though... In the photo with the turquoise armoire and the pink speakers on the desk, can anyone tell me what kind of chest of drawers those are and where I could find them? Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!
