What's In This Closet?

11-20-08 office 6.JPGHint: It's not clothes, games or groceries. It is a perfect small space solution...

For as long as I can remember, my dad has worked at least two days a week out of this converted closet, located in my parents' bedroom. Equipped with a desk lamp, a drawing board and every color of pencil imaginable (he's an illustrator), he's got everything he needs...plus the added bonus of a really short commute.

Though the yellow color scheme could use an update, I think some of his ideas are timeless. In particular, the curved laminate allows for a desk chair to be stored out of the way inside the office and the window allows natural light into what could be a fairly desolate space.

One side note: Dad is a compulsive neat freak, so even though he packs a lot of stuff in his space, I assure you that it's all neat and tidy and perfectly organized. If he had known I was taking photos, I'm sure he'd have trotted out the drawers of color coordinated pencils!

It's rare good fortune that someone has the space and creativity to create something like this for themselves.

That's a closet? Jeez, here in NYC you could rent that out as a spare room.

OMG!!!! I WANT!!!! I'm applying to grad school, and a little nook like that would be sooo perfect to spend hours upon hours deconstructing characterization strategies. :)

Love it, but I have never had a closet with enough space for a desk. That's a small room.

It looks big (granted, it is a full-length closet, not a coat closet), but I assure you that it's not very deep.

And the window has been there as long as I can remember, but I'm betting that it was installed when the closet was converted to an office...I doubt it was in the closet to begin with. That would be REALLY unusual!

I would have totally made a built-in seating area with tons of pillows and room for lots of friends and a bottle of Maker's Mark. I don't want work hidden behind my secret doors, I want hideaways. I suppose what I'm really saying here is I'm looking for new ways to promote drunken debauchery...but if your dad wants to work, totally great use of space. :)

I SO agree with Kimber! My ex-bf just moved out and now I have a decently sized closet available all to myself. I was going to convert it into my shoe closet top to bottom, but now my brain is just inventing the decor of a bunch of hideaways. My apartment is big enough (1100 sq. ft.) that I don't need to convert every nook into something, but how fantastic would that be?! What do I do? What do I do?

People!

Look carefully. Yes, it's a roomy closet, but that is no where near big enough to be a room. I know most of you are kidding, but it's not like it's a walk-in closet or something, which really can be converted into a mini-room if need be.

Hmmm. we have a walk-in with a window big enough for that and I have thought of it... but I think I would rather have a super-sweet closet!
