A great mix of local design, reuse and urban style come together in Shane's condo. She writes: "My home is an 820 square foot condo in the heart of River North. The view east to the city has an incredible skyline view. Sustainability was a key component in designing the interiors.
Low VOC and chalkboard paints were used on the walls. The computer table, coffee table, and industrial cart next to the sofa were all made using recycled wood and created by local furniture designers. The midcentury credenza in the bedroom was found on Craigslist. The Christian Dell Bauhaus scissors lamp was found on ebay, and the edison bulb fixtures above the kitchen island were custom made as well. It was designed with the help of Angela Finney-Hoffman, of Post 27 fame. I would describe the style as a blend of modern and vintage."

sorry to be so negative, and i do love the look and feel of this space, but singling this out as "sustainable chic" s just not at all inspiring, in my opinion. i guess i'm just looking for apartment therapy to assert more editorial control over the use of the term "sustainable" and "green" and "eco" as not just run-of-the-mill, add-some-aesthetically-pleasing-green-features-and-call-it-a-day kind of stuff. i appreciate the efforts to incorporate sustainable options in the interior design, but low-VOC, reclaimed, local/custom, and craigslist are all very standard as far as sustainable design in pre-finished condo goes. i think shane did a great job but i don't really see anything particularly creative or exemplary here. if we really want to talk sustainability, how's the energy efficiency/utility bills, why the inefficient edison bulbs, what's being done for recycling in the unit/building, how is the owner applying sustainability concepts in his home life beyond just designing a pleasing space?
"sustainability" and "green" are overexposed terms used today. Just because a home has low voc paint and a piece of recycled furniture does not make the home sustainable.
This particular space is a nice clean design. Why not just leave it at that?
While the condo looks nice and clean, I don't see anything in there that makes it remarkable, both from a design and from a sustainability point of view.
Gas fireplaces are pretty much the opposite of sustainable design. Walls that don't reach the ceiling mean that rooms cannot be heated individually.
Again, nice looking place, but far from exceptional.

I have to agree with the previous comments about how this place doesn't seem like it's earned the right to call itself "sustainable". The word loses any meaning when it's applied willy-nilly to anything. The place looks nice, but don't pretend it's something it's not.

As for those who are taking part in the "sustainable" debate, I think the term is used far too loosely these days. This term used to/is supposed to sum up as "zero footprint".
I don't see anything wrong with people pointing out the words misuse. Just the same as the watchdogs that protect designations such as "doctor" or "engineer".
