It's a theme I blog about often here at Ohdeedoh - incorporating children into your space. Although I do marvel at my friends' homes where the childrens' things are never seen, my ideal is to have our home reflect the way we actually live, which is with little ones underfoot in every room.
Nerissa and her husband Peter have designed a perfect work studio in my mind. It's bright and functional, even with daughter Luna's toys and books incorporated. In fact, Luna's activity table is front and center but it all works. A couple of 2x2 Expedit storage cubes house toys, books and art materials as well as a printer for the grown-ups. It's a seamless transition from adult work space to child's play area. For more inspiring photos of this shared studio, check out Nerissa and Peter's blog The New Domestic.

We've tried doing separate spaces for our kids' things, but it doesn't work. They play where we are. I love the idea of having all the toys contained in one area, but what really happens is that they drag them all over our house and we have to bring them all back in there to put them away. I have found it's much easier to have mini areas around the house for them--they can play near us, and it makes picking up a lot easier.
We have a sunroom off our living room that I had set up as a playroom for the first year that we lived here, and they never played in it unless we were in there with them. Over the summer, I packed away 90% of the toys and turned it into a library/playroom, with a couch and a comfy chair (adult size!). Now we all use the room and they play in there more than ever.
We live in a ranch style home where the front three rooms are living room - kitchen - living room. We put two small couches in the smaller living room that we've designated as the playroom, so we can hang out in there while she plays and we can see her from the kitchen.
If you have a nanny and work from home this is a big no, no. Otherwise the display in the picture looks beautiful.
