- What I Love About My Small Home:
- The light is outstanding for a ground floor rental. I have big windows facing both east and west so I get lots of sun throughout the day. Plus, for its size, this place has a ton of storage, so finding a home for things has never been a problem. Also, it was just a real pleasure to decorate an apartment exactly to my tastes for the first time in my life. The combination of industrial and vintage items just makes me feel good.
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- Finding ways to deflect or minimize the less-than-ideal elements of my very outdated rental. The ‘70s kitchen linoleum, the wall-to-wall carpet, and the drab pinch-pleat curtains are all things I would not have chosen on my own, so troubleshooting solutions on my very meager budget has been a constantly-evolving process. But truth be told, it’s kind of fun too.

Love the art above the stove, what's the source?
I like what I can see, but why are there no pics of the living room or the kitchen? Sorry, but I don't care about the corner of your stove or corner of your bathroom. It seems like common sense to post pictures of full rooms, but it doesn't seem like a lot of entrants are doing that. It really makes it hard to know what your space looks like if we can only see 1 or 2 walls.
I have that SAME stove in my condo and hate it but you place is super cool.
"grownup curtains"? Really?
Please stop posting vignettes and just show us the *$$%$ room! Seriously, it's out of control. No full bathroom, no living room, and no dining area pictures... but a picture of a stove?
Also, the floor plan makes the space look tiny and much smaller than even some of the teeny tiny entries. I would rethink it.
On the plus side, I love the bed linen and tiny disco ball.
Wow Onieliad! Why so harsh?
Seems like the kitchen is a decent size. Why no full shot of it?
I really like the bedding.
Do you use the typewrite? If not, do you move it to the side when use the desk?
"...some the of entry's that have 400sqft and less."
Onieliad, brush up on correct English usage before you rip on someone's entry.
First of all, just want to say I'm exceedingly grateful to AT. I was very inspired by the 2011 contest and it was a goal of mine in 2012 to submit my own place so it means A LOT to me just to be included. I *totally* understand the feedback about not having enough content in the pictures. My bathroom is cubby-sized, that was as much as I could get in and still capture the art, which is my favorite part. The kitchen was frustrating to me because a lot of the photos came out looking super dark. I ended up with the corner that had the best light. I'm not a photographer. Like many people I have a life and a demanding day job (that is not design-related) and was just doing the best I could do. Feel free not to vote for me if it upsets you -- I don't take it personally at all. Like I said above, for me it was just a real pleasure to be included at all. :)
Oh, the art above the stove I stumbled on at a Salvation Army in South San Francisco. I have no idea of its origin beyond that -- and I wish I did cuz I'd get more. ;)
I love the kitchen details!!!
First of all, very cute! Love the vintage touches, the typewriter, the old cameras, very fun!
Second of all, I totally approve of your apartment choice! I'd take a studio with a real kitchen over a 1 bedroom with a tiny hallway kitchen any day! 70's floors or not :)
Summilux, what monuments of consumption are you referring to? Most people posting entries from 200 - 400 sq ft apartments presumably could not afford to live in a 640 sq apt in San Francisco. I know I couldn't.
Sharon doesn't have to explain herself to me, I was merely giving feedback and good luck for achieving on of her goals. But given the space she has, the fact that she can't even a clear straight shot suggests her floorplan is not using the space to her advantage.

I *completely* agree. Having zero design experience prior to this undertaking, I have been learning through obsessive reading of this site and the basic process of trial and error. Thus, I am exceeding grateful for any constructive feedback that might help me to better understand how I might improve my place moving forward.
I totally get where Sharon is coming from! I've considered sharing my own place, but it can be difficult to get the right shot in a small place, especially if you don't have a huge lens! Bravo on pointing out the things that you love, Sharon :)
Cool Doubting Thomas poster! I've never seen that before.
Aww, play nice, guys! This contest is meant to be fun and to celebrate everyone's personal spaces!
I commend you for braving the sometimes shark infested waters around here, Sharon! This was my first year entering the contest as well and I was super scared what criticisms were going to come in. And like you, I've been watching and reading for ages and just wanted to be a part of Small Cool too. So good on you! If your space makes you happy, that's what matters. It's YOUR space and YOU are the one living there. :)
Hard to judge this based on the pictures, doesn't seem to fit what is described in the text. The bed area looks very cluttered. Also Burlingame is NOT San Francisco, that's like claiming long island is NYC.
i think its gorgeous
Can you tell me where you purchased your bedspread?
Forgot to mention I love the art above the bed.
I'm kind of jealous of the tile color scheme in your bathroom. And I like the stuff you have on your walls. :)
It is incredibly difficult to photograph small spaces, I know, and I think you did well.
