Your Favorite Thing About Your Outdoor Space: Having a gate. After a year of drinking coffee with a view of my car and the street, my girlfriend and I designed and built the wooden gate to make the repurposed driveway feel more like our own private garden. Since it is a rental property, and the tandem parking space would usually be a big selling point in a neighborhood with very little street parking, we knew I might have to remove it when I left...
...It was hard to figure out how to build a gate that could withstand Santa Ana winds but that wouldn't be permanently anchored to the ground. Then we discovered pier blocks, which are heavy enough to stabilize the gate, but easily removable. Now, with the gate, the space really feels like a yard.
Biggest Design Challenge With This Space: Creating a yard out of part of my concrete driveway, which also doubles as a walkway to my neighbor's house in the back.
Tips for Creating a Great Small Outdoor Space: Plants can be better than parking spaces.
Thanks, Shayla, and good luck!
