I've been complaining about the bad light in my bathroom for a while now. So the first step was to take down what was in the house when we moved in...

Then, last weekend I installed a vanity lamp above the mirror. And while I could finally put on my mascara without jabbing myself in the eye, I wasn't entirely happy with how it looked. The shiny metal surface was way too flashy against the blue wall. Then I realized that the solution was quite simple.

Stay tuned for what I did and how it turned out...

Funny, I'm trying to find a light fixture to replace exactly what you put up.
Can't wait to see the end result.
Speaking of bathrooms, I was helping some friends paint the apartment that they had just rented. They were kind of depressed, because they had just been evicted from their old apartment, because when they had moved in there was NOT a No Dogs rule, and yet they had no dog. But after they got a dog, they found out there had been a No Dogs rule that had been passed WHILE they had been there unbeknownst to them, so they to either get rid of the dog or leave, and they decided to leave.
Anyhoooo.... in the new apartment they didn't want to do anything serious to the make it nice other than painting, and there was a missing one of those little plastic medallions that covers up the screw in the middle of one of the faucet handles. You know that little crystal-ish looking thing with the H and the C on it? Anyway... I went to the hardware store on 102nd and Broadway and they HAD those little plastic things for like 50-cents each! So, for like a dollar, I put new little H and C things on their other-wise sad-looking faucet handles, and it really made a difference between looking like a decent home and looking like someone had decided that crappy was "good enough".
I don't get it... you replace a light fixture with that one?
I also just took down that fixture and threw it away...
fyi: overhead lighting isn't very good for putting on makeup since it casts a shadow down upon you, i.e. dark undereye circles.
I look forward to seeing your solution to this atrocious light fixture. Please don't keep us waiting long...I'm having nightmares.
Man, you guys are a tough crowd today!
I'm hoping you didn't pay money for that.
I do like the look of the mirror, but it seems like the light is right on top of it. It's hard to tell from the angle of the shots, but maybe lower the mirror a bit (or raise the light) so there is definition between the two items?
Can't wait to see what you've done...
It's not "tough crowd" so much as puzzlement -- even Home Depot carries inexpensive three-lights-above-mirror fixtures more appropriate to the style of the mirror, so why go with the "standard cheap rental lights" in the first place? It must have been a freebie or there was some other concern about permanent fixtures...
Looking forward to seeing the improvements!
As best I can make out, that looks like a terrific mirror over the sink. I'm wondering what aesthetic principle led you to putting that new light fixture over it. . . . I really don't get it. What do you have up your sleeve?
Cosmetically speaking, those type of vanity lights work best when placed not only on top, but around the perimeter of the entire mirror.
In any case, I can hardly wait to see the end result!
Just as an anecdote, I had been noticing lately that I was starting to look really tired/haggard and, well, old, especially around the eyes. I was getting a bit depressed about time marching on, but then I looked up and noticed that a couple of bulbs had burned out on the vanity lighting strip above the mirror. I suppose (I hope!) the dark circles and bags are due to the uneven vanity lighting rather than, gasp, the rapid aging of my face!
love the mirror.
the fixture is alright, but they just dont work together at all, especially with that wall color. keep the wall color and the mirror, but install some hanging lamps for a Moroccan feel. or keep the wall color and the lighting fixture, but go with a more modern mirror to evoke a Hollywood regency or even a deco-y feel.
but if you're going to keep that fixture, i would highly recommend silver-dipped bulbs.
