Name: Shayne, Andrew, Alro and little Goldie
Location: Palms - Los Angeles, California
Size: 1,600 square feet
Years lived in: 2 1/2 years
I had so much fun photographing Faith Blakeney's Treehouse, that I was super stoked when she told me that one of her good friends/clients would love to open up her home for me. Shayne and Andrew's style is eclectic and their home creates a playful environment for their two young kids — combining great design with kid-friendliness.

Shayne and Andrew were faced with one big challenge: wanting to create a beautiful home on a major budget. Shayne and Faith sat on Craigslist, found great sales, and negotiated their way into almost every last furnishing in the home. It took a lot of patience, but eventually the home came together. Their home is such an inspiration for what the possibilities are for great design, even when you don't have the dream budget!

Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Artful, child-friendly, rustic, laid back, Mid-Century eclectic
Inspiration: Creating a refuge from the city. A home full of everything we love.
Favorite Element: Our kiddie chair collection, the red lacquered image of a couple embracing, the converted garage, the garden and playhouse - most of all - this hundred year old house!
Biggest Challenge: Lack of funds
What Friends Say: "Who designed your place?" We did along with our friend, neighbor and interior designer extraordinaire - Faith Blakeney

Biggest Embarrassment: The Japanese porn bathroom
Proudest DIY:The garage flip! Also, we furnished this whole house for around $10,000. It was done out of necessity and it has become a source of pride and inspiration.
Biggest Indulgence: The dining room table and Faith's killer eye.
Best Advice: Recycled/vintage toys - they are beautiful and last forever. Also, don't skimp out on the details; they can make or break a space.
Dream Sources: The Rose Bowl at 6:30am with a purse full of cash and snacks, an assistant, and a driver with a big fat van.

Resources of Note:
All vintage, thrifted or came with the house

Thanks Shayne & Andrew!

Omg, This. Is. My. Dream. Home!!! by far and beyond my fave house tour! Great job!
Those are some of the most beautiful windows I've ever seen on a house. Their delicacy sets off the funky interior beautifully. It seems like a house with a lot of joy :-)
oh good god i love this place.
What a great place to live, and grow up! You've created an amazing, well designed, livable space.
I feel foolish asking this question since I know those are well-known chandeliers--but who is the designer for them again? Making a note for my future place to get one!
This place is absolutely gorgeous, looks lived in, and has such personality. A great house tour!
It's remarkable that sweet old house survived intavt through the LA real estate flipping era. It's an anacronism in the Palms I know. What a lovely retreat from the city!
I love this home! It looks so cozy and perfect for a family. I love that you worked within a budget. I think your home looks way better than the homes where everything is mass market items. Do you have the plans for the playhouse?
Homey. Comfortable. Eclectic. This place feels so right...
One of my favorite house tours, by far. Not only do I want everything in your home (that giant table lamp! the Wegner-esque footstool!), I love the warmth and charm.
You certainly can rock that 60's vibe. Feels like home. Love that super tall turquoise lamp and the sweet painting of the slim couple in white with that red background.
You have a door to your backyard from your bedroom: something I will forever be jealous about. :o)
Windows, windows, windows..Love 'em.
Rocking play house.
One question: Why a glass door into the bathroom?
All-time favorite!!!
Love that huge table lamp on the yellow desk--among hundreds of other great details. Definitely feels like you've spent more than $10,000.
I love this house! I'm obsessed with the blanket/quilt/duvet or whatever it is draped across the bed. I need 2 of them and I need them yesterday! Where is it from?
So laid back and stylish. A dream home tour I'll take many times. Love the babies of course & the tall-shaded lamp on the yellow desk is a wonder (-:
Wow, it's magnificent, especially the room I'm assuming is the converted garage? The room with the desk and the flokati rugs? Houses like this are more than jus homes—they're museums. I just love all the vintage details and items of interest.
Much to love...including the remarkable thrifting/bargain hunting! That comically oversized lamp is spectacular...what sort of irrational heathen would dispose of that??
I love this house tour! Love it.
I love lamp!
wow. i am in LOVE with that lamp in the last picture. just basically in love with this tour in general...
One of my favourite house tours ever. So much character. What a delightful place. Thanks for sharing!!!
OK. Great house, loved it, beautiful. Great lines- the windows are gorgeous!!! But that forlorn look on the child in the first foto almost turned me away. She certainly does not look happy to be there. Would make a great foto for www.unhappyhipsters.com. But the house is great and I would sooooo love to live there (if they want to adopt me!!!)
beautiful home with such wonderful pieces and details! your children will surely appreciate the fact that you have surrounded them with such a lovely environment.
Best. House. Tour. Ever!
That's kind of mean to say about the precious little girl. She might be bored or aware that her picture is being taken. I see a tiny smile in the picture where she is jumping off the porch. Anyway, love the house!
I'm in Luv !!!
the bones alone in that house are worth this tour! Lovely home! Really makes me wish I could afford to live in a farmhouse sooner
Dream house. For. Real.
Also, is "Alro" a typo? (Arlo?)
Such a beautiful home. Where is the dining table from? It's amazing!
Simply a wonderful, inspiring, happy, home sweet home! The lamp on the last page is to die for!
I also love that children will get to grow up in such a magical home with so many things to stimulate them, inspire them and stir their curiosity. There is such a feeling of LOVE you get from looking at these photos. :-)
Littleboots, just google "sputnik chandelier" and you'll get lots of sources and price points.
Love it! Some really great art
I had to register to comment on this home--B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L. Can you please name the paint sources for the grays? I've been searching for the right gray w/ my warmish wood trim, and I'm in love with your choices.
I, too, would love to know what you painted the master bedroom and kitchen?
so wonderful. Faith's touch in the details, colours, vintage art and small pieces...the way it's put together: placement of practical and playful, honouring what is, imagining what could be---your "eye" transforms a "project" into an artful, enticing, protective sanctuary. It makes all the work of design and choice look organic, as if the house kind of grew up that way. Bravo once again.
@ecuadoriana1. I had the opposite reaction to the photo of the child and strangely enough it was what drew me in! To me, he (someone else here said it's a she?) has one of those great dreamy expressions only kids seem to get.
It's so interesting how different people can 'translate' the same photo to read totally unrelated emotions. But whether forlorn or daydreamy (we'll have to ask him/her someday), it surely is a beautiful kid, ya gotta admit that.;-)
Where is that yellow desk from?
Very sweet, fun, family home! Lots of personal character & childhood inspiration.
the middle jacket in picture #34 matches my favorite purse! dusty blue w/ the rainbow stripe... I got it at a thrift store and it's hand-sewn, I wonder if my purse is made out of an old coat!
I have the same duvet. Its the Jaipur print by Echo available at Bed Bath and Beyond or Macys. Plus its on sale this week.
So warm and stylish at the same time. Amazing. I'm in love with all the art and the rugs, especially the pink-ish rug under the flokati one in the garage. I'm assuming that's vintage...if anybody has any tips on how to get something at least similar, please do share. Thanks in advance!
